AUTOMOTIVE "X"

Automotive X PRIZE is finally wrapping up. Of 136 vehicles representing 111 teams that originally entered the competition, just 9 vehicles representing 7 teams remain. All that the cars need to do now is pass the Validation stage, with the winners then to be announced in September. Here’s a quick look at what happened over the past few days, at the Michigan International Speedway.

Last Wednesday and Thursday, July 21st and 22nd, the (then) 15 vehicles competed in the 136-mile Efficiency event. This two-day challenge simulated urban, city and highway driving, and required vehicles to achieve at least 90 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe) – when combined with the Validation stage results, the cars must average 100 MPGe. On Friday, the cars had to complete the Range event, in which the Alternative and Mainstream classes had to drive continuously for 100 and 200 miles, respectively. Both the Efficiency and Range tests were elimination events.

Just to keep things interesting, temperatures in southern Michigan were hovering around 86F (30C) throughout the end of last week, keeping both the interiors and motors of the cars toasty warm. Although no one was called off the track due to overheating in the cockpit (which is a possibility, due to temperature gauges within the cars), the Edison2 team had to repeatedly pull one of their Very Light Cars into the pit, so they could cool its motor by dousing it with water.

Ultimately there were four eliminations.

The Amp team’s electric amp’d Sky exceeded the emissions-equivalency limit of 200grams/mile of CO2 in Efficiency, and could also not complete the required distance in Range. The same things applied to Commuter Cars’ electric Tango, plus it was unable to meet the minimum fuel economy for Efficiency – Spira’s combustion Spira4u also couldn’t meet the required fuel economy, while Tata was unable to present their electric Indica Vista EV X for the Range event.

The remaining 11 cars took part in the Dynamic Safety event this Monday, which tested the vehicles’ 0-60 mph acceleration, braking, and accident avoidance capabilities. Western Washington University’s gas/electric Viking 45 couldn’t pass the accident avoidance test within the six-attempt limit, while Edison2’s combustion Very Light Car #95 couldn’t complete the day’s event due to mechanical problems.

On Tuesday, in the non-elimination Combined Efficiency and Performance test, cars simply had to try for the fastest time around the two-mile oval, while maintaining 100 MPGe. Even though they had already been eliminated, the Indica Vista EV X, amp’d Sky, Spira4u, Tango and Viking 45 also took part in this event, for demonstration purposes.

Over the next three days, the finalists will take part in a non-elimination Coastdown test. Then next month, in the Validation stage, the vehicles will undergo dynamometer testing under controlled laboratory conditions at Argonne National Lab facilities. The car in each class that exceeds 100 MPGe and meets emissions and performance requirements will win, and be presented with their share of the $US10 million purse on September 16th. In the case of a tie, the winner will be decided by the results of yesterday’s Combined Efficiency and Performance event.

The competitors left in the Automotive X PRIZE are:

•Edison2, Very Light Car #97 (Charlottesville, VA), Internal Combustion Engine
•Edison2, Very Light Car #98 (Charlottesville, VA), Internal Combustion Engine

INDYCAR IN CANADA (WEST)

WILL POWER - 2ND, SCOTT DIXON - 1ST AND DARIO FRANCHITTI - 3RD

Well, those are the standings of this race. No offense to Edmonton, Alberta, but I wish they would dump these so 1950's airport racetracks. I think IndyCar has about three of them on their schedule. Since they like to have a diverse racing program maybe they could keep the best one. They are the only series that has airports, street, oval and road courses.

And just like Formula One they have rules. To the naked eye this incident didn't look like a anything, but the race stewarts it did. Check out the video below as Helio Castroneves becomes a very unhappy camper.

FORMULA ONE IN GERMANY

Ferrari pulled a one-two in Germany with teammates Alonso first and Massa in second. Well, that is the way it will read forever. Anyone who saw it will say, 'no way!' And they will stick by their guns...Massa got pimped. Big time.

Team orders are supposed to be a no-no since 2002. Back in the days when Ferrari gave team orders as to who was going to finish and in what order. The fans were so sick of it Formula One made it a rule. Today Ferrari asked Massa to let Alonso pass claiming he had the faster car, but the stats don't show that. So, the Formula One stewarts fined Ferrari €100,000 for the stunt. Ferrari could care less about the money. What would have gotten their attention would be to disqualify both of their cars.

Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull came in third.

TUESDAY'S SPECIAL

1967 LOLA T70

1967 Lola T70 Mk.3 Chassis number SL73/119was originally produced in Spyder form and was one of two cars built and delivered new to the Dana Corporation in the USA, Both cars were destined to compete in the 1967 Can-Am Series, one car driven by Lothar Motschenbacher and the other, this one, driven by Peter Revson carrying the number 52 for the season. 1967 returned mixed results, bearing in mind at this point the Mk3 was at the end of its competitive life, and was used subsequently in SCCA and USRRC championship races. By 1978 the car had been sold to Chuck Haines, who then sold it to Ian Webb of Norhtdown Racing in the UK. Several drivers, including Willie Green, John Brindley and Ian Taylor, then raced the car and by 1987 it was sold again, following a rebuild by Rod Butterfield who transferred the car from its original Spyder form into a closed Coupe. At this point the car was purchased by Ben Huissman of Holland and resided in the Huissman collection until acquired by the current owner. The car was then fully rebuilt by Clive Robinson and returned to correct Mk3 specification, with gull wing doors and the correct nose and tail sections. A new 5-litre Chevrolet engine was fitted at this time. The car was run in Group 4 series and European Sports Prototype Series, the highlights of which include a 3rd place at the 2003 Le Mans support race (despite a faulty shock absorber), a first place finish at Killarney, South Africa, and an impressive outright race victory at Monza. In 2006 the car was completely stripped and rebuilt, again by Clive Robinson, and returned to race ready condition. The car stands today absolutely on the button and ready to go with HTP Papers. This represents an excellent opportunity to acquire the ex Peter Revson 1967 Lola T70 Mk3.
