FORMULA ONE IN HUNGARY

Finally, Lewis Hamilton won a race this season. His first win since signing on with Mercedes. He has won in Hungary four times (with McLaren) to match Michael Schumacher. Kimi Raikkonen, running 28 laps on the same tires, came in second. Sebastian Vettel came in third and still holds the championship lead.

Mark Webber, fourth.......again.

Rumor.....they are talking about having Raikkonen replace Webber when he leaves at the end of the year. Raikkonen playing second fiddle to Vettel.....I don't think so.

INDYCAR IN CANADA - RACE TWO

HELIO CASTRONEVES, 2ND - SCOTT DIXON, 1ST - SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, 3RD

Scott Dixon looked like he had a pair of jet engines mounted on his car. For 81 laps he outpaced everyone for the winning position. After winning the last three races in a row he now has 32 race wins under his belt. Second place went to Helio Castroneves. Third went to Sebastien Bourdais.

The race was started with a standing start like Formula One. They tried to do it in Detroit and they tried to do in for yesterday's Race One. Didn't work, but they were able to pull it off for Race Two.

It should be noted that Sebastien Bourdais did not have 'push-to-pass' available to him right from the beginning as all the other drivers did. He did a great job to even make third without that available. Scott Dixon had it, but didn't need to use because he was already flying.

Tony Kanaan hit the wall and ended up in 24th, out of the race. Takuma Sato had an accident two laps from the finish, he was running about 10th and ended in 20th due to the accident.

$29,650,000

A Mercedes more than a half-century old and driven by one of Formula One's most famous racers, Juan Manuel Fangio, became the most expensive car ever sold at an auction, according to the auctioneer.

The 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R fetched $29.65 million Friday at the auction in southern England, said Bonhams, with the identity of the buyer not disclosed.

That figure beat the previous record -- a 1957 Ferrari was purchased in 2011 -- by about $13 million.

Argentina's Fangio used the car en route to winning the second of his five world titles. Soon after it was placed in a museum.

Fangio won a record 45 percent of the grand prix he entered and started nearly 60 percent of his races from pole position -- reigning Formula One king Sebastian Vettel doesn't come close to matching that.

He won the championship with four different teams -- the only man to achieve the feat -- and is also the oldest Formula One champion, claiming the title in 1957 at the age of 46.

INDYCAR IN CANADA - RACE ONE

SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, 2ND - SCOTT DIXON, 1ST - DARIO FRANCHITTI, 3RD

In a final shootout Scott Dixon, who also won last week, beat Sebastien Bourdais by 1.7007 seconds. I was cheering for Bourdais because his last couple of years in IndyCar haven't been too lucky. He is a fine driver and champion four times under the CART series. I hope this race is a turnaround for him. He still doesn't have any luck, upon presentation of his second place trophy it came apart and broke. I have never seen that before. Dario Franchitti came in third.

Like Detroit, this weekend is going to be a two race series. I hope the second race works out better than it did in Detroit. When the races are this close the drivers (and everybody else) can't get enough rest.

Tony Kanaan ended up in fifth place. Takuma Sato had mechical trouble on lap 32 and retired in 24th place.

Speaking of Takuma Sato, he has been placed on probation for the next 5 races because of his pit-lane accident last week at Pocono. I never heard of such a thing....come on guys, its racing.

CATERHAM 620 R

For four decades, the Caterham Seven has been turning heads and packing large servings of performance into a very small package. This weekend, at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Caterham Cars is unveiling the slightly mad Caterham Seven 620 R, which will be put through its paces by F1 Team driver Charles Pic and other drivers from the Caterham stable. Built to celebrate 40 years of the Seven, Caterham says that it’s the most extreme version in the lightweight, high-performance line ever produced.

Replacing the Superlight R500 as top of the line, the 620 R continues the Seven's emphasis on light weight, accessibility, and minimalism, but pours in more horsepower and torque than any Seven has a had to handle before.

The 620 R has a new gunmetal chassis with carbon-fiber wings, roll bar, an air-flow optimized nose cone and a race-developed cooling package. The supercharged, two-liter Ford Duratec pushes 310 bhp (231 kW) through a six-speed sequential gearbox with flat-shift to give the 545 kg (1,201 lb) vehicle 219 lbs/ft (30 Nm) of torque. Top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h) with acceleration pegging 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.79 seconds.
Up front there's wide-track front suspension with adjustable double wishbone and in the rear there’s a De Dion axle on a lower A-frame and Watts linkage. Both front and rear suspension units have high performance dampers all round, as well as disc brakes with ventilated front discs and quad piston calipers.

Inside the 620 is what Caterham refers to as “high-performance focused instrumentation and ergonomic switchgear,” which means that it’s a pretty basic layout of dials and levers and not much more. There are also carbon-fiber interior panels and dash and carbon-fiber race seats with four-point race harnesses and a Q/R Race wheel for the rack and pinion steering.

INDYCAR IN PENNSYLVANIA

A trip down memory lane here at Pocono with the first IndyCar race in 24 years. Not an oval and not a road course, it is more like a triangle with a curve at each angle. Scott Dixon was the winner, his 30th victory, and it was his first win this season. Charlie Kimball, who suffers from diabetes, came in second. Dario Franchitti was third.

The Chevrolet engine was the odds on favorite to win here, but all three of these guys were using the Honda. All three were teammates and it is the first time their owner, Chip Ganassi, with all his racing endevors ever had a 1-2-3.

Tony Kanaan ended up in 13th after a short stint in the lead and Takuma Sato ended up in 22nd after an accident forced him out.

FORMULA ONE IN GERMANY

Sebastian Vettel gets his first win in his home country. Always a treat for a race driver. He was closely chased by Lotus teammates Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean, who finished in that order, 2nd and 3rd.

Mark Webber, who started the day very strongly, lost a wheel in the pits which struck a camera man. It was a right rear wheel and camera man was very lucky to only break a collar bone and a couple of ribs. A head strike could have easily been fatal. This happened on lap 9 and Webber spent the rest of the day chasing everybody. He went from 21st, which was last at the time, and ended up in 7th which is a very nice run. Red Bull was fined €30,000 for losing the wheel.

THE GREAT RACE

Proving that last year’s win in the Great Race around the Great Lakes was no fluke, wife-and-husband team Irene and Barry Jason of Keller, Texas, took their second Great Race win in a row this past weekend in Mobile, Alabama.

Driving in the Grand Champion class – reserved for those who have previously won the Great Race (either as driver or navigator) – the Jasons will not only take home their second trophy and bragging rights, but also the first place prize, a check for $50,000 courtesy of the Coker Group. Over the course of nine stages and 45 legs, the Jasons managed no less than least 12 perfect legs (called “aces”) and one perfect stage (after leg one of stage six was discarded), amassing just 0:57 in penalties over the course of the entire event. Applying the adjusted age factor (meant to level the playing field for older cars) of 0.825, the Jasons completed the event with a score of 0:47.03. As they did last year, the Jasons won with a commanding lead over the second-place team, this time with a gap of more than 14 seconds.

In the X Cup category, reserved for younger teams (and generally associated with a shop or vocational school program), the crew from McPherson College drove their 1957 Ford Fairlane to a first place finish with an overall time of 4:42.07. X Cup rules state the vehicle must be specially built for the Great Race by those in the program, and require that the navigator be under age 21 (although the driver is required to be 21 or older). The intent of the X Cup program is to instill a passion for old cars and the collector car hobby in the next generation of Great Racers.

The Expert division, limited to those who have finished well in previous running (but have never won), saw Jim and Louise Feeney take top honors (and second place overall) in their 1936 Ford Fordor with a time of 1:01.79. The Sportsman division, open to contestants with prior experience (but lacking a significant overall placing at the finish), was won by Bryan Dickson and Preston Green, driving a 1928 Ford Model A Speedster, with a time of 1:48.90. In the self-explanatory Rookie division, it was Brad Epple and James Goode who came in first, driving a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, with a time of 5:54.90.

This year’s weather ranged from torrential rain through scorching temperatures and high humidity, but only 23 cars out of the 91 entered were scored with DNFs in a given stage. Of these, only 11 failed to make the start of the final stage, a testament to the determination (and mechanical aptitude) of participants and support crews.

Look for the 2014 Great Race to move further east, with a scheduled route that takes participants from Maine to Florida. For full results from the 2013 race, visit www.greatrace.com.

HAGERTY, THE CLASSIC CAR INSURANCE PEOPLE, DOES IT UP PROUD

It took 123 people, donating 2,750 hours, over the course of 21 months, skipping 215 lunch breaks, making 900 telephone calls, uttering “too many four-letter words to count,” and going through three tubes of super glue to repair torn skin on their fingers, but they got the job done.

The job? Taking a classic 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS, one of the coveted 396-cubic-inch “big block” cars with a four-speed manual transmission, from “totaled” to totally ready to return to the road.

The project was the second restoration effort undertaken by employees of Traverse City-based Hagerty Insurance, the world’s largest insurer of classic cars and wooden boats. Many of the people who work for Hagerty are classic car experts with years of hands-on experience at maintenance and restoration. But many others don’t bring such experience to their jobs, so every year or two, the company finds a vehicle in need to restoration, recruits employees willing to get down and dirty, and rebuilds a car in the company’s garage.

“Everyone has heard stories about the time and effort that go into a restoration, but it isn’t the same as actually doing one,” said company president McKeel Hagerty. “What makes the Camaro an interesting car story is that more than 100 people worked on restoring it. Having been totaled, it was all but gone to the world. So for us to take it on was a huge project.

“It took a long time — hundreds and hundreds of hours — but restoring a car that had been in a major collision was a great learning opportunity for us. It’s the business we’re in; we pay claims like this all the time. But fixing one is an altogether different thing.

“This has been a learning experience for everybody, particularly those in the claims department. How do you source parts? How do you fix body panels? What do you fix and what do you replace?”

The reward for the employees is at least threefold: They learn new skills — from welding to dent repair, they experience what the company’s car-collecting clients go through on a regular basis, and when the project is completed, the participating employees get to borrow the keys from time to time, checking the car out of the company garage for weddings, proms, family reunions, or just for a nice weekend road trip.

First, however, the car will be on a “comeback” tour. The tour began June 22 when two of those Hagerty employees — Tabetha Salsbury-Hammer and Tricia Felski — serve as driver and navigator, respectively, as the ’69 SS competes in The Great Race, a highly competitive classic car rally that this year travels along the banks of the Mississippi River from the Twin Cities of Minnesota to Alabama and the shores of Mobile Bay on the Gulf Coast.

The car will be at a classic car show in Wisconsin in mid-July, then will be on display July 28 at the Concours of America at St. Johns in Plymouth. In early August it goes to Toronto for the Hagerty Driving Experience, a program designed to teach young drivers how to manipulate manual transmissions. The car will participate in the Woodward Dream Cruise in mid-August, and the official comeback tour ends in October at the big annual autumn classic car gathering at Hershey, Pa.

The Camaro had been a California car and therefore rust-free, but had been totaled in a massive front-end collision. What the folks at Hagerty didn’t know, however, was that the car had been involved in three collisions, and that even the repairs that had been made were in need of repair, which contributed to “97 unforeseen costs” — and to many of those 900 telephone calls made to find parts for the restoration project — according to the www.hagerty.com/camaroproject.

All the work on the car’s restoration was done by Hagerty employees, with two exceptions. The orange paint and the application of the vinyl top were done by outside specialists.

But everything else was done in house, and the car was returned to its original specifications — with one exception: A second speaker was added to the factory audio system.

The “Comeback Camaro,” as the car is called, was the second such restoration project by Hagerty employees. They’d redone a 1930 Ford Model A. A third project is about to begin: Hagerty has obtained a 1951 Buick convertible that needs restoration, but that one may wait a while because what the employees really want to do is to find and resurrect an original Ford Mustang in conjunction with that car’s silver anniversary.
