WOMEN TO FORMULA ONE.........AGAIN

Simona de Silvestro

Swiss IndyCar driver, Simona de Silvestro, doesn't have an IndyCar seat for 2014  She had been in IndyCar for the last four years, starting 65 races. She has signed a deal to be a development driver for the Swiss owned Sauber F1 team.

She will be joining Susie Wolff who is a development driver for the Williams Formula One team since 2012.

Susie Wolff

Also, in 2012, the Russian formula one team, Marussia, had hired Maria de Villota as the reserve/test driver for that season. She had an accident on her maiden run which ended up costing her life in 2013.

McLAREN'S NEW ADDITION

McLaren has surprised the world by releasing full details and images of its latest supercar ahead of the Geneva Auto Show next month. The new 641 hp 650S appears to reside in a special place somewhere between McLaren’s “affordable” 12C and the stratospheric supercar realm of the million dollar P1.

The 650S, which receives its less than original name from the new 641 hp V8, doesn't seem to deliver much in the way of aesthetic surprises.

“Everything we learned from the 12C and P1 has gone into the design and development of the 650S,” says McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt.

The 650S’ nose certainly carries over design traits from the P1 while the roofline, cabin treatment, dihedral doors and massive engine intakes are straight from the 12C. The engine cover and lines leading towards to the car’s integrated spoiler/airbrake are also remarkably similar to the 12C. The side mirrors on the other hand have definitely received some attention. Overall the car appears heavier and more substantial than the 12C but not as extreme in execution as the P1.

But even though the 12C and 650S deliver similar drag coefficient figures, the latter is reportedly capable of a 24 percent increase in downforce. McLaren has upped the these figures by adding a new integrated front splitter that not only helps push the nose down but also redirects air to special door blades behind the front wheels, further increasing forward grip. These aerodynamic additions, plus the additional horsepower should give the new McLaren a definitive handling advantage over the 12C on the track.

Beneath the new supercar’s transparent engine cover resides an updated and more powerful version of McLaren’s award winning and much loved twin-turbo V8. The newly tweaked M838T engine develops a healthy 641 hp versus the 12C’s 616 hp, a welcome power increase, but nowhere near the 903 hybrid-horsepower output of the P1.

Keeping traction to the road and the car between the ditches will be the job of the new 5-spoke lightweight forged alloy wheels. The 650S’ bespoke Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires were developed in partner with the Italian tire manufacturer and designed to offer optimal handling under both road and track situations.

Performance figures for the 650S (the "S" stands for Sport) unfortunately won’t be available until Geneva, but the company has confirmed that further development of the firm’s sublime Pro Active Chassis Control (PCC) suspension setup is part of the package. According to McLaren the new PCC system has been recalibrated for the 650S, with special attention paid to “Sport Mode” in order to provide drivers a more engaging experience.

But while tweaks to the car’s handling, gearbox and drivability are important it’s the updated active rear spoiler that steals the show. Whereas the airbrake/spoiler in the 12C was activated under hard braking, the revised wing system in the 650S now participates when it senses that increased downforce is required.

The 650S interior receives similar design treatments to its 12C stablemate. Carbon fiber accents populate the interior and steering wheel, and on the info-tech front, there's an IRIS sat-nav system with Bluetooth telephony, a DAB digital radio, wireless tethering, audio streaming and voice control as standard. Optional amenities include P1 inspired fixed-back carbon racing seats, a rear parking camera and a more extensively carbon fiber saturated interior for those who just can’t get enough. Open top goodies for the Spider version are sure to make their way into the mix just like the 12C.

The global reveal of the McLaren 650S CoupĂ© and Spider will take place March 4th, 2014 at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show. Watch for Gizmag’s full coverage of the Show and more on the 650S next month.

MAYBE IT IS JUST ME

It is probably just me, but the new French Canadian Felino cB7, posted below, looks like it could be a modern update of the French 1938 Talbot-Lago T150C. When I first saw the Felino the Talbot came to my mind. French roots.

SUPER CANADIAN

North America may be in the grip of a brutal winter, but Canada is trying to bring in some heat with a homegrown supercar. At this year’s Salon International de MontrĂ©al, the Felino Corporation unveiled its Felino cB7 – a high-performance two-seater for the track that’s potentially street legal. Led by CEO and Canadian champion race driver Antoine Bessette, it marks the culmination of a four-year effort to bring a supercar out of Quebec.

Since the Felino Corporation was founded, it was known mostly for organizing corporate events, conducting advanced driving classes, and coaching top-level race drivers. But In 2010, it turned its efforts towards creating concept cars aimed at the track-day crowd. Building on lessons learned from a four-cylinder prototype that began testing in 2012 on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve and other locations, the cB7 is Felino’s try at upping the ante a bit.

Billed as a second-generation prototype, the rear-wheel drive, mid-forward engined cB7 has an improved tubular frame chassis wrapped with composites. With a wheelbase of 2,451 mm (96.4 in), its 1,135 kg (2,502 lb) curb weight is distributed in a 50/50 ratio between front and back.
FELINO cB7

The body is made of composites with carbon-fiber panels, the wings are integrated into the bodywork, and there are HID performance headlamps. As far as style goes in that composite shell, it carries an air of aggressive, almost vicious fantasy. With flaring wings and a peculiarly high passenger cab, from some angles the cB7 looks like it’s all vents, air scoops, and through lines with a car slipped inside afterwards.

Under the bonnet is a 6.2-liter V8 engine with a cast aluminum engine block punching 525 bhp (391 kW) and 489 ft-lb (663 Nm) of torque. According to Felino, a four and six-cylinder version are also available. Backing this up is a six-speed manual, optional sequential gearbox. As to performance, the company says that those numbers won’t be available until tests are completed later this year.

The cB7 has independent, double-wishbone cast aluminum front and rear suspension with adjustable spring and compression rate. The aluminum alloy wheels have six-piston caliper front brakes and there are four-piston calipers in the rear.

Since this is primarily a track car, it isn't surprising that the cB7 features molded carbon fiber seats with six-point harnesses. There’s also a removable quick-steering wheel, the carbon-fiber dash has an on-board data acquisition system, and Felino also offers optional race suit cooling.

Felino says that the cB7 is aimed at the international market, but will also sell a limited number in Canada. The company is still finalizing some design details and will build two more concepts before production models start to roll out sometime in 2015. There are also plans for a possible electric car down the road.

Though the final price has yet to be determined, the Felino cB7 will be offered at under US$100,000.

SPECIAL OF THE WEEK

1976 PLYMOUTH VALIANT

Unrestored survivor. The car has 47,000 original miles on its 225CID slant-six engine from one owner, and has always been garage kept. This Valiant starts, runs, and performs perfectly, and both the interior and exterior are in excellent condition. This car would function well as either a daily driver or an addition to a classic car collection. There's not much to say about this car, it's a straight-up, unrestored survivor and has never been dismantled or molested. Reliable, comfortable, and powerful, this car still has a ton of life left in it.
