MARK WEBBER ON THE MOVE
It has not been a secret that Mark Webber has been my favorite F1 driver for several years. I remember picking up on him in the Le Mans series in the late 90's. This past week he announced that he was returning to the Le Mans series to spearhead the new Porche team. I am going to miss him in Formula One that is for sure. He is a hard driving racer with a good head on his shoulders. He always says what he means and means what he says. I like that and wish him luck.
FORMULA ONE IN ENGLAND
MARK WEBBER, 2ND - NICO ROSBERG, 1ST - FERNANDO ALONSO, 3RD
What started off as a ho-hum race became anything but. Nico Rosberg became the winner when Vettel's car broke down in the last few laps. He was being chased by Mark Webber who was only 0.7 seconds behind. One more lap and the outcome would have been different. Fernando Alonso came in third.
The Perlli tires were just as much trouble as they have been from the beginning. Only this time the left rear tire seemed to explode leaving several drivers out on a limb. Felipe Massa, Jean-Eric Vergne, Esteban Gutierrez, Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton all had the left read tire disappear on them. The Red Bull team said that they noticed a delamination problem on Vettel's car. Delamination! I haven't heard that term since the 60's when America was experimenting with re-capped tires for cars and trucks. Does that mean that Perlli is giving them re-capped tires to race on? Perlli has no incentive to fix their tire problems because next year they are out of the picture.
Some notable drives were had...Mark Webber plunged to 14th by the end of the first lap and ended in second...Lewis Hamilton went down to 21st and ended in fourth place...Felipe Massa also dropped to the back of the pack and ended in sixth. What started ho-hum became very interesting.

INDYCAR IN IOWA
RYAN HUNTER-REAY, 2ND - JAMES HINCHCLIFFE, 1ST - TONY KANAAN, 3RD
This oval is the tightest of the tight. Only 7/8 of a mile and clearly meant for another type of racecar. Even with its turn, turn, turn tightness the drivers maintain an average miles per hour in the mid 170's for 250 laps.
The winner was James Hinchcliffe, winning his third race this season, who remained in the lead a good portion of the race. Followed closely by his team-mate, Ryan Hunter-Reay, last year's champion. Rounding out the top three was Tony Kanaan, winner of this year's 500.
Takuma Sato did not finish due to mecanical problems.
Driver of the day, other than the winner, was Ryan Hunter-Reay. Due to problems he had been bumped to the end of the pack, passed everyone to end up in second.

RYAN HUNTER-REAY
Whew! This track is one short, tight track. Ryan Hunter-Reay, last years champ, was able to hang on for first place. Followed by Helio Castroneves and Will Power. A fairly uneventful race except that there is always a winner.
Takuma Sato, after leading 109 laps of 250, came in 7th and Tony Kanaan rounded out the top ten with 10th.

FORMULA ONE IN CANADA
SEBASTIAN VETTEL
Canadians love their racing and it showed today with a standing room only crowd. It seems very strange that Red Bull had never won in Canada. Very strange, indeed! They can put that by the wayside as Sebastian Vettel left the pole position and never looked back. Winning his 29th race and Red Bull's first in Canada. Second place was hotly contested by Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso with Alonso taking second and leaving third place to Hamilton. Vettel was so far ahead that he lapped everyone except the top five places. We don't see that too much on the new tracks, but Canada has been around for a long time.

INDYCAR IN TEXAS
HELIO CASTRONEVES
So, what else do you do on a hot Texas night....of course you go to the 'Firestone 550.' A tight oval track of only 1.5 miles for 228 times. The race wasn't as tight at the end like most IndyCar races, but it still had the sell-out crowd on their feet. Helio Castroneves won his 28th race and charged up as usual. Ryan Hunter-Reay, last year's champion, came in second. Tony Kanaan, this year's Indy 500 winner came in a distant third.
Takuma Sato was unable to qualify so he had to start in 21st and ended up in 11th.

SPECIAL OF THE WEEK
1947 DeSOTO
Colorado Spruce green with original gray cloth interior, recently exposed after being protected since new by factory seat covers. Nice chrome and glass. Powered by 236.6 ci. 109 hp. flathead six cylinder with three speed Fluidrive that works perfectly. The car runs quite, smooth as silk. This is a wonderful car to drive. It is just out of long term storage from an estate. Low miles, approx. 36000 since new. Currently has original paint with minor touch ups. You may want to touch a couple more minor flaws or enjoy the once in a lifetime originality. The car has the optional light up lucite hood flying lady hood orniment, and the original gas cap has the DeSoto logo on it yet. Blackwall tires give a look right out of the 1940's. Seriously, this is a very great car.

INDYCAR IN MICHIGAN........RACE TWO
This statement seemed to be very close to the truth. The first half of the race was run under many yellow flags, it seemed that every restart they would get to do a couple of laps and then 'bang' another car entanglement.
JAMES JAKES, 2ND - SIMON PAGENAUD, 1ST - MIKE CONWAY, 3RD
Simon Pagenaud, winning his first IndyCar race, was happy to have it over with. It was a crazy race right fromt the beginning. Cars smacking into the walls, the tires, each other and finally having an eight car pile-up. From that point on it was a race. For a long time it looked like Mike Conway was going to win again which would have given him a $50,000 bonus, but as racing goes it just wasn't to be. Second went to James Jakes, with his highest finish yet, and third went to Mike Conway.
I think the next three races are on oval tracks which will eliminate Mike Conway. After his very bad accident at the Indy 500 a couple of years ago he has decided that he will no longer race on oval tracks. He just wasn't comfortable with them. Hopefully, when IndyCar gets back to the road tracks in July, Dale Coyne Racing will pick him up again.
Takuma Sato hit the wall or a tire barrier on lap 24. Tony Kanaan started in something 19th spot and for a while challenged 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but ended up in 12th.

INDYCAR IN MICHIGAN........RACE ONE
RYAN HUNTER-REAY, 2ND - MIKE CONWAY, 1ST - JUSTIN WILSON, 3RD
They were able to beat the rain and Mike Conway won by a nearly a full 12 seconds. That doesn't happen very often in IndyCar, they are uaually much closer than that, tenths or hundredths of a second. Conway was brought in for the race by Dale Coyne Racing, the team that went 20 years without a win and has now had three. To add the icing to the cake, Justin Wilson, came in third and is also from Dale Coyne Racing. Second place went to Ryan Hunter-Reay, last year's champion.
In some ways Detroit still has a problem getting it together. If anyone remembers that last year they had a problem with the track coming apart. Repair patches pulling up and leaving large holes in the track and the patches getting tangled up in the cars. This year they had some loose tires that were used to warn drivers of the road edge (I think), but when these were hit they went out into the track interferring with at least three cars.
And what of Tony Kanaan and Takuma Sato? Kanaan claimed that his car was 'horrible' even though he spent some time in the front. Sato had a spin and his car was never the same after that. Kanaan ended in 13th and Sato in 19th.
