SATO, KANAAN, MONTOYA AND ED CARPENTER RACING FOR 2017
SATO
As the IndyCar season was winding down it looked like Takuma Sato was going to be bumped off of the A. J. Foyt Enterprises team. At the time nobody was stepping forward to pick him up and I thought he might be pushed off into the retirement zone. He will be 40 this next season and that is the age Indy drivers start looking at the end. The Andretti Autosport team stepped in and saved the day. I always liked Sato and thought that he was a good driver....over 50 Formula Three races, 91 Formula One and 118 IndyCar races. I would like to see him around a few more years.
KANAAN
Just because of his age I that Tony Kanaan might be on his way out. He is 41, but has the fire in the belly. Worked his way through the Indy Light series and was a champion in 1997. In IndyCar he was a champion in 2004 and won the 500 in 2013. He is the only driver to have led the 500 at point in every 500 he entered. A very popular driver and it will be a sad day when he goes. Happy to see that Chip Ganassi Racing picked him up again.
MONTOYA
No getting around it, Juan Pablo Montoya is a driver's driver. After racing throughout Central and South America he became a champion in Formula 3000 in 1998, champion in CART FedEx in 1999, won the Indy 500 twice, in 2000 and 2015. In his rookie year in each series he has been in he won in Formula One, CART, IRL, IndyCar, Grand Am and NASCAR. He has started in 22 races in Formula 3000, 40 in CART, 50 in IndyCar, 100 in Formula One, 212 in NASCAR, 7 in Daytona, 89 in Grand Am. Quite a load. He is currently 41 and has not been picked up for 2017. With the exception of a seat for the Indy 500 with Team Penske. Is he done? I hope not.
ED CARPENTER RACING
This has been my favorite team for a few years now. He now has two cars and one full time driver, J. R. Hildebrand, and currently one part-time driver, himself. He prefers to race the oval tracks and leaves all the rest to another part-timer. That seat is currently unfilled and it will be interesting to see who gets it this coming year.

I MUST ADMIT, I AM STILL SPINNING
When I first read that the newly crowned champion of Formula One was going to retire I thought it was a joke. It has taken me two days to wrap my head around it. I was so happy to see him win and was looking forward to his being in the field for at least another seven years or so. He claims that he wanted to go out on top and spend more time with his new family. You can't knock him for that. The management at Mercedes was unhappy because he didn't give them any real notice. To be fair, if the shoe was on the other foot they wouldn't give him a notice either. It will be interesting to see what he does in the future and I wish him the best.

FORMULA ONE IN ABU DHABI
NICO ROSBERG, 2ND - MERCEDES MANAGEMENT TONY ROSS - LEWIS HAMILTON, 1ST - SEBASTIAN VETTEL, 3RD
Quite the race for the last of the season and down to the wire for the Championship. Lewis Hamilton won the race and tried to slow the race down so that traffic would interfere with Rosberg enough to keep him from the title. Didn't work, and Rosberg came in second and he also won the Championship. Vettel came in third on the heels of Rosberg. If the race had been a bit longer it would have had a different outcome, in fact, Hamilton may have ended up the Champion. I am happy with the way it worked out. Looking at the podium these guys raced carts together 20 years ago and all three are now world champions. Vettel four times, Hamilton three and Rosberg one. I wasn't wild about the way Hamilton played today, but there have been plenty of drivers in the past who would have done exactly the same. Rosberg's father was a world champ back in 1982 and they are only the second father/son duo to do it. The other was Graham Hill in 1962 and 1968 and his son Damon Hill in 1996.
Now on to my favorites, Nico Hulkenberg ended up in 7th winding up a nice season with Force India. He is moving on to Renault next season. Felipe Massa finished 9th. This is his last race in Formula One....retiring at 35. Everybody likes him and he must be one of the nicest men in the world. The Williams Team gave him the car that he has been racing. A very nice gesture considering they are multi-million dollar cars. Also retiring today was former world champion Jenson Button at age 36, but his car didn't finish the race today. Button was in 305 races and Massa 252.
The American Haas Team finished 11th and 12th today. I think that had a great first season, scoring 29 points. Drivers Grosjean will be with them next season and Gutierrez will be replaced.
All in all I think it was a great season. Next year with some drivers moving around, new car designs and management changes it should be just as interesting. Hopefully Mercedes will not dominate the season again.

FORMULA ONE IN BRAZIL
ROSBERG, 2ND - MERCEDES MANAGEMENT - HAMILTON. 1ST - VERSTAPPEN, 3RD
Always an interesting race here in Brazil. They say that it is going to be the last race in Brazil and I say, why? Hamilton was the winner, Being out in front he was the only one that could see due to the rain. He has been breaking records right and left. Today, at 52 wins, he past 51 held by Alain Prost. Leaving only the 91 held by Michael Schumacher and will be very hard to beat. Rosberg had a chance for the Championship today, but now it goes to the last race with only 12 points separating him and Hamilton. Today he came in second. Verstappen, who came in third, was nothing short of fantastic. After being in 16th, caused by a series of tire changes, he made a fantastic run passing almost everybody.
Hulkenberg came in 7th after an up and down race. This was Massa last home race before his retirement at the end of the season. He crashed out in the persistent rain....on his way to the pits thousands of people cheered him...and when he got to the pits the teams cheered him. With special hugs from Ferrari (his old team) and Williams (his new team). It was very emotional.
The Haas team had its problems too. Grosjean crashed out before the race started and Gutierrez failed to finish. The team is not keeping him next year and he acted like a baby in the garage....might have something to with it.

FORMULA E IN MORROCO
Formula E shows up to save the long winter months. While the rest of the racing season is winding up Formula E will try to carry us race nuts through the winter racing in all the warm places of the world. Now in its third year I still find it hard to get used to, but I do like the idea.
The winner, picking up where he left off at the end of last season, was Sebastian Buemi on the 'e dams' team. Second went to Sam Bird for Virgin. Third went to rookie Felix Rosenqvist for Mahindra, the tractor producer.
