IN THE BEGINNING
For the second week in a row a race has brought me out of my seat for the same reason. Dumb race steward calls. Last week in Detroit (IndyCar) for a blocking call and this week in Formula One for gaining an advantage by cutting a corner. Both calls will probably remain on the books. Both involved Championship points and both made the race stewards look like numb-skulls.
Overall the Belgium Grand Prix was the best Formula One race this year. The last laps had every one’s blood rushing to their heads. Actually, the last two laps is what brought me out of my seat. It wasn’t until after the race that the stewards made their decision.. Hamilton had cut a corner which put him out in front of Raikkonen. A big “no-no”, but he slacked off to let Raikkonen pass. Which is what I thought they were supposed to do. Get rid of the unfair advantage by letting him pass. What was he supposed to do….stop the car and get out?
The last two laps in the rain had cars changing positions by the second, tenths of seconds. It ended with Hamilton in first, Massa in second and Heidfeld in third..
Until “bango”, Hamilton was hit with a 25 second penalty which dropped him down to third. If it hadn’t been raining it might have dropped him down further than that. The other two each moved up one place.
It was one great race, but it is like bowling, a win is a win …it all looks the same on paper. After all the shocked comments by announcers, journalists, former race drivers…I have only one thing to say and you will have to pardon my Belgium Flemish …”BULLSHIT”
