SCOTT KALITTA 1962 - 2008

Over the years I have not been a follower of Drag Racing, but a lot of names stick in your head as it was growing in leaps and bounds. One such name was Connie Kalitta, a Detroit local, who wasn't much older that me. Which is probably why we crossed paths every once in a while. He was the first drag racer to reach 200 miles per hour in that short quarter of a mile.

His son, Scott, had followed in his footsteps and played the racing game. Over the years he had made his own set of records. Yesterday he lost his life doing what he loved to do. You can't fault him for that. Age 46, wife and two children.

INDYCAR IN IOWA

Dan Wheldon celebrated his 30th birthday by winning the Iowa Corn Indy 250. Team Green drivers Hideki Mutoh and Marco Andretti were second and third.

FORMULA ONE IN FRANCE

Felipe Massa was victorious at the French Grand Prix followed by his teammate Kimi Raikkonen. Jarno Trulli, in his 192nd Gran Prix, came in third in a hotly contested spot.

24 HOURS OF LE MANS

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain. In France it falls on Le Mans. I am hard pressed to remember a race without rain in recent years. Here are the winners:

LMP1 - Audi - Allen McNish, Rinaldo Capello and Tom Kristensen

LMP2 - Porsche - Peter van Menkseign, Jos Verstappen and Jeroen Bleevemolen

GT1 - Aston Martin - David Brabham, Darren Turner and Antonio Garcia

GT2 - Ferrari - Mika Salo, Jaime Meco and Gianmaria Beuni

If I was a betting man my money would have been on Peugeot #7 with Jacques Villeneuve, Nicolas Minassian and Marc Gene. Which is the car below, they came in second, four minutes behind.

FORMULA ONE IN CANADA

After a race with "parts is parts" all over the track and pitlane, lead drivers out in one swoop, less than half the field finishing...BMW pulls their first victory and a one-two at that. Robert Kubcia won his first Formula One. Last year in Canada he had a terrible accident of which a video of it was included in this blog. So, this year he shows them all. Speaking of showing them all, David Coulthard, the old man of Formula One came in third for Red Bull.

Canada is always a tough race.

INDYCAR IN TEXAS

In a 550k, Saturdsy night time race Scott Dixon was the winner. Followed by Hello Castroneves and third place goes to Ryan Briscoe.
