SPECIAL OF THE WEEK

1966 OLDSMOBILE

Up For sale is this 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado Coupe. This car was initially purchased for a private collection in 1966 and was driven sporadically until it was parked and sat in 1971. This car last saw the road in 1979 when registration was not renewed. The car was brought to my attention two years ago after the family sold their house and the vehicle wound up at a storage facility in Orange county NY. To my amazement the car started ran and drove with fresh gas, and all new fluids, filters and plugs/wires. I know very little about the car other than it was last registered and on the road in 1979, and the family claims it had been in their garage since the owner (family member) perished. The car has NO RUST anywhere, its very clean. The body has no repairs other than dings and a scuff prior to repaint. The quarter panels floor pans and all of the metal is original. The chrome is original and in great condition with exception of one dent (pictured) and minor pitting in some spots. The headlights work intermittently, I am unsure of how to go about fixing them so I did not attempt to repair them. The lights turn on but don't pop up all of the time. The car received new tires because it sat on the original tires which did not hold air when it was brought to me. The car did not run when I was called to prepare it for the sale. The car was towed to a garage where all of the fluids were flushed and replaced, new plugs and wires were installed and new tires were put on. The car started and ran great! No smoking, compression and internals are great. we did NOT replace any parts on the engine suspension, drivetrain transmission etc. The engine and The transmission are in great shape it shifts well, the car runs and drives excellent (better than my 2006). the interior received new carpets (old carpets were dirty and stained from years) the driver side of the seat had a piece repaired (upholstery shop) Everything else is unmolested. The gauges all work, the AM radio and speakers work, all of the windows roll up and down! The blowers and fans/vents all work! This car starts up and drives great, very quiet and drives like it should. The miles on the odometer read 5,987 however I do NOT know if they are original or not. The car was only on the road 10 years and sat for over 30+ years. The interior of the engine looks clean, the frame and floor pans are excellent! The doors close snug and perfectly. I Bought the car in 2012. There was nothing replaced on the outside or interior. Just the fluids/filters, paint, carpets, plugs/wires, tires and brakes. It still has the original exhaust system and lines. This car is as close to original as it gets. Nothing in the engine compartment was painted, it even still has the original under the hood cover, and decals. This car starts and runs excellent every time. I do not have the owners manuals, however I do the the title from 1978 (last title issued). any picture requests OR questions are welcomed. The car is in excellent shape.

FORMULA ONE IN HUNGARY

DANIEL RICCIARDO IN THE WINNER

A very interesting race. Starting in the wet which usually lends to cars spinning of the track and bumping into each other. There was a little bit of all that. Ricciardo pulled off his second win of the season in the last three laps of the 70 run. Second went to Alonzo which should have made him happy since he hasn't been having a very good season. Third again went Lewis Hamilton who was easily the driver of the day. Again he started in last place, had a spin out and a brush with the barriers. A lot of work, but he was able to do it again.

GIANNAI LANCIA........1924 - 2014

Gianni Lancia, a leading figure of Italy‘s postwar automotive industry, has died aged 89, his family announced Friday.

He ran Lancia cars - founded by his father Vincenzo in 1906 - from 1947 to 1955, when his family ceded control of the loss-making business, based in the north-western city of Turin.

Gianni Lancia is remembered for his engineering expertise - poor business acumen. On his watch, Lancia dominated F1 races and produced one of the most technologically advanced cars of its time, the Aurelia, while flirting with bankruptcy.

In 1955, Lancia‘s leading F1 driver Alberto Ascari died in a crash at Monza. In reaction, Gianni Lancia donated the F1 unit of the company to Ferrari - which helped it win the 1956 season - and sold the rest to the Italian cement family Pesenti.

Under the Pesentis, Lancia continued to make critically acclaimed cars, such as the Flavia and the Fulvia, which failed to return any profits.

The debt-ridden company was bought by Fiat for a nominal one lira in 1969, and has been in decline for decades. The current boss of the Fiat-Chrysler group, Sergio Marchionne, has announced plans to gradually phase out the brand.

SPECIAL INTEREST SCHOOL

For those who think the automotive restoration hobby is of no interest to today’s youth, McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas, would beg to differ. As the only school in the country offering a four-year degree in Automotive Restoration, McPherson’s program combines the hands-on approach of shorter programs with the benefit of a comprehensive liberal arts education. Recognizing that its sole-source advantage may not last forever, and in an effort to maintain its appeal to the next generation of restorers, the college has undertaken an effort to improve and upgrade the Automotive Restoration Program with new hardware and a sharpened focus from its faculty.

The need for process improvement was identified last September, when the institution held its first-ever strategic planning meeting for the Automotive Restoration Program. Rather than involving only faculty and college administration, the off-site conference included participants like Jonathan Klinger of Hagarty Insurance (a McPherson graduate); Paul Russell of European restoration specialist Paul Russell and Company; Scott George of The Collier Collection; and Adam Bank of Rad Rides by Troy. Though the college views its existing curriculum as solid, the focus of the planning meeting was on improving the program to better predict changes to the industry in the coming years, in order to best shape a program relevant to student needs.

To experience what world-class shops collections do differently, the college sent a team of seven faculty, two students and two advisers (one of whom will be joining the staff this fall) to tour a series of facilities and collections in California. The shop tour consisted of visits to Competition Touring Cars, McGee Motor Sports and John Anderson Racing Services, all located at Sonoma Raceway. Next, the team visited Daryly Hollenbeck’s Vintage Color Studio, followed by stops at Phil Reilly & company (vintage car repair), Moal Coachbuilders, Roy Brizio’s Street Rods, and Canepa Design. The private collections toured included those held by John Bertolotti, Arturo Keller, John Mozart and Larry Carter, where the team got to experience everything from brass-era cars through contemporary race cars.

Given that the school trains students to work in a variety of automotive-themed careers, such a diverse approach to program development makes good sense: While many program graduates pursue hands-on careers in auto restoration, others go to work for auction houses, automotive collections or insurance companies, bringing with them a unique perspective on the industry as a whole. McPherson students have even participated in The Great Race, where this year’s team captured the X-Cup (aimed at those in auto-themed school programs) for the second time in two years.

The key to any automotive restoration program is giving the students the right tools to train on, and McPherson is looking to make key improvements in this area as well. Updates are planned for the engine lab, including a new engine dynamometer; although Automotive Restoration Program vice president Amanda Gutierrez pointed out that this is still in process. The metals lab has just received a Pullmax P5 power hammer, and judging from the school’s Facebook feeds, it’s been all hands on deck this summer in an attempt to get labs and work benches refurbished in time for the fall semester.

The school even recognizes the need for faculty professional development, though given the unusual focus of its programs, off-the-shelf continuing education hardly applies. Instead, McPherson is examining the possibility of short-term paid internships, where faculty would be given the opportunity to work for shops, collections or even museums to gain real-world experience. Such programs would cost the college a considerable amount of money, and as a non-profit, funding for any program needs to be raised in advance.

As for the hardware upgrades to the program’s labs, the same constraints apply. Per Guitierrez, one of the school’s biggest challenges is balancing upgrades that are needed immediately with upgrades that fit in the budget; as a non-profit, the college is always looking for participation and support from equipment vendors. Giving the students the right equipment to work on is a key component of McPherson’s focus on excellence, as the ultimate goal of the Auto Restoration Program is equipping students to work at the highest level in their chosen automotive fields.

SPECIAL OF THE WEEK

1946 PACKARD LIMO

What a beautiful car! This factory Limousine comes equipped with everything a 1946 Limousine should have including the up & down center privacy glass factory jump seats. The interior is immaculate. The instrument cluster looks great. Some of the gauges do not work properly however the speedometer and odometer both work as they should.

The factory 356ci 165hp engine is completely original and runs great. Power is surprisingly strong and responsive. She drives straight and stops perfectly. The 3 speed manual transmission shits easily with no grinding in any gear. As you would expect, this Packard glides down the road quietly and in complete comfort. No rattles are detected. You can actually feel its presence as you drive. Nothing I needed. You can start enjoying it immediately. Just get in and drive.

Paint is very clean and has a great shine. There are some minor imperfections to the paint which you will see upon close inspection. They are in the form of a few surface scratches. Chrome and trim are in great condition. The front chrome bumper shows some surface rust but no rust through at all. The undercarriage is immaculate for a car of this age. There are no signs of rust at all.

INDYCAR IN CANADA - RACE TWO

MIKE CONWAY

I couldn't be happier with the results of both of these races. Mike Conway, one half of the Ed Carpenter Racing Team, was the winner. Tony Kanaan came in second to add to his third place in race one. He did this after a small accident in the first lap that left him in 23rd place.....all the way to second.....now, that is some driving. Third went to Will Power.

Takuma Sato came in fifth to ease his pain of the last place finish in race one.

INDYCAR IN CANADA - RACE ONE

SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS

I am very happy to see Bourdais win this race. It is his first win since 2007. A four time champion when IndyCar was called Champ Cars and a former Formula One driver. Plus I like the team he is on, KV Racing Technology. Second place went to Helio Castroneves. Third to my man, Tony Kanaan.

Takuma Sato went in the very beginning in yet another contact problem leaving him in last place.

This race was supposed to be run on Saturday for 85 laps. Heavy storms caused them to cancel the race until today. They decided to reduce the laps to 65 and the same for Race Two. Especially since they are now running close to back to back. These drivers have already had a rough schedule since the Indianapolis 500 in May.

FORMULA ONE IN GERMANY

NICO ROSBERG

Nico Rosberg was able to stay far out in front from the beginning to the end for the win in his home country. Behind him the race was a real race with plenty of challenges, enough to keep it interesting. Second place went to Valtteri Bottas who will someday be a champion. He is doing very well. Third place went to Lewis Hamilton who was easily the driver of the day. Starting in pit lane at the very end of the very full field, he passed one car per lap to be in second place by lap 18. With his pit stops he ended up in third, a busy day for him with good results.

In the first turn of the first lap, Massa in third, didn't see Kevin Magnussen on his right side and pulled into him. Magnussen punted Massa like a soccer ball tipping him over. The forever unlucky Massa wasn't hurt which is the only good luck he can ask for.
UPSET OF THE VERY UPSET MASSA

Speaking of soccer balls, Rosberg painted a picture of the Soccer World's Cup on the top of his helmet in tribute to Germany's title win last week. The governing body of soccer, FIFA, made him take it off his helmet. A lot of the top drivers change helmets for each race, auction them off at the end of the year and donate the money to charity.

INDYCAR IN IOWA

RYAN HUNTER-REAY

Ryan Hunter-Reay had the time to scoot in for new tires which put him ahead of the pack. I was rooting for Tony Kanaan who had led for 247 laps....seems like when you work that hard you should at least get a win. We all know that isn't the way it works, but I was rooting for Tony anyway. Josef Newgarden, with is best finish to date, came in second. Tony Kanaan came in third.

Ed Carpenter, the oval king, came in fifth. Finishing last was Takuma Sato due to an accident on lap 47.

SPECIAL OF THE WEEK

1983 BMW 635 CSi

Excellent example of the fantastic 635 CSI. European model that was imported to the states by local Diplomat. All EPA/DOT paperwork available but car is now exempt because of the age. Super straight body with no accidents ever and paint appears to be mostly original. Some minor nicks and scuffs but in beautiful shape overall. Interior is all original and in wonderful condition thruout. Seats, door panels, dash, carpets and headliner have held up remarkably well with all gauges functioning properly and factory sunroof working great. Has a newer CD player with very nice speakers but otherwise all correct. Car has been meticulously maintained by very highly regarded BMW specialist with extensive service records. Just had recent tune with full valve adjustment. Engine and trunk compartments are really nice and very correct. Has beautiful BMW alloys wheels and nearly new tires for a truly wonderful ride. Car needs to be seen and driven to fully appreciate how fantastic these 6 series really were. Overall a well cared for car that is ready for its next proud owner.

INDYCAR IN PENNSYLVANIA

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA

And the winner is.....Juan Pablo Montoya. I said last week that he was well on his way for his first win of the season. After a 14 year rest from Indycar it is like he never left. Fifteen leader changes, but only between four drivers. Helio Castroneves came in second and Carlos Munoz in third. Munoz is having a great season for a rookie.

Takoma Sato started in 4th and was doing very well until an electrical problem put him out and left him in last place. Tony Kanaan who spent some time in the lead had to give it up three laps from the end for fuel and ended up in 11th for his efforts.

Mr. Oval, Ed Carpenter, ended up in 13th.

FORMULA ONE IN ENGLAND

VALTTERI BOTTAS, 2ND - MERCEDES REP - LEWIS HAMILTON, 1ST - DANIEL RICCIARDO, 3RD

Nico Rosberg led for the first half of the race and then started having car trouble causing him to drop back in the field. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, was there to pounce on the opportunity and led the rest of the race. Bottas got another podium finish which is two in a row. Third place went to Daniel Ricciardo.

A first lap accident with Ferrari and Williams left the race on hold for one hour. A single file safety car restart left a dull race for a while. They were able to make a race out of it anyway.

THE GREAT RACE 2014

A Texas couple in a 1966 Ford Mustang achieved the first-ever threepeat of consecutive victories in Great Race history by winning the 2014 Maine-to-Florida classic car competition.
While they were at it, Barry and Irene Jason also scored a couple of other firsts. No one before them had ever scored a perfect day in the time-distance rally contest, as they did on Day One. And no one had ever won the Great Race in a post-war car, a difficult feat because of a scoring system heavily handicapped toward older vehicles.
So that’s three wins and three firsts, and the reward for Jasons’ efforts this year was a $50,000 first-place check that they collected at the finish line on Sunday.
The Jasons of Keller, Texas, won the 2012 and 2013 Great Races in a 1935 Ford coupe, but this year they opted for their bright-red 1966 Mustang, a six-cylinder coupe favorably equipped with air conditioning. This is the 12th year that Barry Jason, an electrical engineer, and Irene Jason, a retired school administrator, have run the cross-country race.
The Great Race, an annual event founded in 1983, is a long-distance rally for pre-1972 vehicles. This year, the 2,300-mile race started June 21 in Ogunquit, Maine, and finished Sunday in The Villages near Ocala, Florida.
Ninety teams started out in the competition, with a number of them dropping out before the finish because of typical old-car mechanical breakdowns. The Great Race visited 19 cities along the way with local spectators creating a festival atmosphere at each stop.

1951 NASH

Straight, southern CA rust free car that runs and drives well. Solid floors, new tires, good brakes, strong engine, good clutch, and sound transmission. This is a time warp car with CA registrations from 1954 through 1968, owners brochure and horse racing programs and betting forms from 1958. Needs new interior, paint and re-chroming. I just drove the car from northern Orange County down Laguna Canyon Road and it drove 50 mph, could use a wheel balance, stops well and shifts and drives perfectly. It obviously needs a lot to be pretty but not much to be a very cool driver.
