VETTEL, 2ND - TONY ROSS FROM MERCEDES - BOTTAS, 1ST - RAIKKONEN, 3RD
Even though I spent several years getting tired of Sebastian Vettel's complaining and constant winning (a plus for him, can't take away what a good driver he is) I found myself cheering him on at the end of this race. We all have to give it to Bottas for a fine job and I guess that is what Mercedes saw in him for their choice. For Bottas this was a first win in Formula One. He bemoaned the fact that it took him over 80 races to do it. He shouldn't be so hard on himself because there have been drivers that drove hundreds of races never to win. Vettel was so close at the end, only 0.617 seconds behind. His teammate, Kimi Raikkonen, came in third.
My favorites are the same, with Hulkenberg in at 8th and Massa finishing 9th due to a last minute flat tire. The American Haas Team had Magnussen in 13th and Grosjean out on lap 52.
A TRULY HAPPY FOR BOTTAS LOOK FROM FORMER TEAMMATE MASSA
I have to give the drivers credit for all appearing happy that Bottas won with handshakes and pats on the back. Although, a cool one from Raikkonen, what would you expect from the 'Iceman.' Or could it be because there is a new Finn in town.
Also a nice touch from Putin. He didn't just pass the trophy and run....he spoke to each of the top winning drivers back stage. This is something that rarely happens.
A three-time Grand National Champion in the motorcycle field in the late 50's. Then switching to USAC (former Indycars) in the 60's and 70's. During that time he was the teammate of many top level drivers. A touch older than most of them, but still very competitive.
After years of chasing a win on an oval track, Simon Pagenaud finally makes it his day. Followed across the line by his teammate Will Power. Third went to Ed Carpenter Racing's J. R. Hildebrand. In this race I was watching my usual favorites for Oval racing Tony Kanaan who came in 6th, Ed Carpenter who was 7th, Takumo Sato who went out on an accident on lap 135 and Sebastian Bourdais who went out in a five-car pile up in the first lap.
My very favorite team for Oval's is Ed Carpenter Racing, who have flown under different names over the last few years, finished in the places mentioned, 3rd and 7th.
It must be the track for Josef Newgarden, his second win here with two different teams. I felt kind of bad for Will Power who led about 2/3 of the race off and on. I guess I can't feel too bad since it is a car race and the first over the line at the checkered flag is the winner. Second went to Scott Dixon and third to Simon Pagenaud.
Tony Kanaan finished 7th and Takumo Sato came in 9th. The Ed Carpenter Team finished 19th and 20th. Being led around the track from announcer to announcer was Fernando Alonso, from Formula One, seeing how things worked as he is getting ready for the Indy 500.
HAMILTON, 2ND - FERRARI MANAGEMENT - VETTEL, 1ST -BOTTAS, 3RD
The picture says it all and these drivers will be the 'usual suspects' throughout the season. Several years ago when the track at Bahrain first opened their races were 'ho-hum' to boring. These last few years they have been very good. Today was no exception, very good race, especially the first 30 laps. Sebastian Vettel was able to pull it off again. Followed by Lewis Hamilton and his teammate, Valtteri Bottas. We should have an interesting run for the championship this year. I am always invited to this race and hope to make some year.
Massa came in 6th and Hulkenberg ended in 9th. Romain Grosjean placed 8th for the Haas Team and his teammate, Kevin Magnussen, did not finish at lap 49.
