INDYCAR IN WESTERN CANADA

Another happy man, Will Power, with his first win in the IndyCar series. Second went to Helio Castroneves and third to Scott Dixon.

TWICE IN A WEEK

Yesterday during qualifying for the Formula One race in Hungary, very popular race car driver Felipe Massa was struck on the head by a spring that fell off another car. He has life-threatening injuries for which he had brain surgery this morning. They had to remove pieces of bone from his brain. This is the second time in a week that this type of freak accident happened with a driver being hit by flying debris.

I tried to include some videos, but the first one I tried had the same problem that I have been having with ‘YouTube.’ There isn’t a copyright agreement between YouTube and Cyprus so even if I post them YouTube takes them down. I ended up posting a couple that may not have copyright problems and a link to one from Dutch site which may be stopped by Formula One itself.

Dutch site: http://www.dumpert.nl/mediabase/580471/374165c4/ongeluk_felipe_massa.html

Since YouTube chose to remove the video try this:

FORMULA ONE IN HUNGARY

In spite of the black cloud of Massa's accident here are some happy faces. Lewis Hamilton with his first win this year. Second to Kimi Rikkonen who is Massa's teammate and having a tough year. Third to Mark Webber who is happy to be on the podium again and now second in the point standings.

THE TAX MAN

Apparently this tax collector also collects classic cars. He has 13 and six of them he has gotten through the tax court. Not by bidding on them, but by making them part of his tax collection decision. The informal hearings — conducted by clerical staff in counties across Texas — receive no outside scrutiny or oversight. Tax collectors have complete authority to rule as they see fit, regardless of the evidence. The hearings are usually closed to the public, often one-on-one, and completely off the record.

So, in order to get a tax deal someone has to cough up a classic car. In a recent case he traded his 2003 Aston Martin on a 2005 Bentley Continental GT. Turns out that the Continental was stolen. That didn't stop John Wiley Price, merely on his word Price was granted title to the Bentley, and paid sales tax on the $41,700 value of the vehicle that remained after the $86,300 trade-in for the Aston. I doubt very much that any money really changed hands.

What a cake of a job to have. By the way, I thought that in America the use of all three names in your moniker was reserved for mass murderers.

AND A GOOD STORY FROM RACING

Hershel McGriff was good-natured about finishing 13th in a national NASCAR series race at age 81. Pleased with his showing at the Portland International Raceway in the West series. In a career that has spanned more than six decades, he has four NASCAR Cup series victories and 37 wins on the West series. He is a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame.

What can you say besides, “Go, McGriff!”

HENRY SURTEES jULY 20, 2009

As in the last few years there are several children of former Formula One drivers moving up through the various racing series. John Surtees, now 75, gave me many thriling moments in the early sixties leading up to his 1964 championship with Ferrari has lost his son in a freak Formula Two accident. Another car went off the road and one of the tires broke loose from it tether and hit young Henry, 18, in the head. A lot of these racing kids have lost their fathers, but it isn't very often that it is the other way around.

The father, John, was a racer's dream. He started off in motorcycles and was the Motorcycle Grand Prix Champion 7 times. Switching to Formula One and becoming champ in 1964. To this day he has remained close to racing and to motorcycles.

TONY MAGGS 1937 - 2009

When I first became interested in Formula One there was a fistful of drivers from South Africa. Tony Maggs was their first driver in 1961. His death due to cancer brought up two stories. One that I had forgotten and one that I never knew.

The one that I had forgotten was that in 1965 he had a racing accident that killed a little boy who was watching from a prohibited area. Such was racing in those days...always someone in the prohibited areas and always someone killed in them. Maggs never got over it, quit racing and went back to his beef farm in Africa.

The one that I never knew was that two years late, in 1967, he was the passenger in a small plane accident. He managed to escape but suffered serious burns as he tried to rescue the other passengers.

INDYCAR IN CANADA

I have said it before and I will say it again, Dario Franchitti (Mr. Ashley Judd), is always a winner. He won here in Toronto ten years ago and was certainly willing to do it again. Always a good race through the streets of Toronto.

Ryan Briscoe, who has been doing quite well lately, came in second followed in close persuit by Will Power. I stil love that name.

FORMULA ONE IN GERMANY

Hooray! Mark Webber, who has been my personal favorite this year, has finally had his first Formula One win for Red Bull. He was able to do this even with a drive-through penalty for a first lap contact with Barrichelo.

Red Bull teammate, Sebastian Vettel, came in second and Felipe Massa from Ferrari was third for his first podium finish this year.
