INDYCAR IN BRAZIL

TAKUMA SATO - 3RD, RYAN HUNTER-REAY - 2ND, WILL POWER - 1ST

There must be something wrong. A day in Brazil without rain. A race day yet. Will Power won his third race in a row. My personal favorite, Sato, finally made it to the podium in third place. It won't make up for the third place he lost in the last lap a couple of weeks ago, but he is very happy to have it. Just how good was Sato today? Well, he started in 25th and ended in 3rd. Ryan Hunter-Reay finished second to grab his second podium of the season, and 10th podium of his IndyCar career. Hunter-Reay now has 13 career podiums in major open-wheel competition. Highest finishing Brazilan was Helio Castroneves in fourth place

FORMULA ONE IN BAHRAIN

The race that almost wasn't and probably should not have been. Bahrain was cancelled last year due to human rights protests....shootings in the streets, etc. And I think it should have been cancelled this year too. As from the first race there I have been invited by my friend who claimed that it was safe to come. For three days before the race the people were protesting in the streets. At least one person killed. Two teams had their mechanics chased by protesters. Scary enough that some of them asked to go home. I did read last week that some of the teams were not interested in going. I also heard that all teams were leaving as soon as the race was over. Other than at the start-finish line that stands were empty.

Sebastian Vettel made it look easy. From the start he jumped into the lead and stayed there. Vettel's victory means four different drivers have won the opening four races of a season for the first time since 2003. Second and Third went to Team Lotus, a surprise and a great drive for both drivers. Kimi Raikkonen, back from retirement was hot on Vettel's trail and Romain Grosjean, a new young driver, was on the podium for the first time in Formula One. Mark Webber came in Fourth for the fourth race in a row. Last week's winner, Nico Rosberg, came in Fifth.

SPECIAL OF THE WEEK

1952 BUICK

This is a superb, California, unrestored, totally original 1952 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon from the next-to-last year of true wood-bodied Estate Wagons built for Buick by Ionia, one of just 359 built on the Series 70 Roadmaster chassis with 321 cubic inch overhead valve inline eight, 4-barrel carburetor, 170hp and Dynaflow automatic transmission. Its second owners were Floyd and Lillian Rammell in Sacramento, California who purchased it in 1957, and was acquired by an Oklahoma collection directly from the Rammell family in 1996, giving it just three owners from new and a continuous history of careful ownership and continuous attention. The car comes complete with an extensive file of original period photos of the car from the 1950's thru the 1990's as well as original books and sales materials. In addition to Dynaflow it also has power steering, power-assisted brakes, radio and Buick-labeled underdash air conditioning. The wheels have wide whitewall tires and Buick's distinctive "sombrero" wheel covers. The body, and particularly the original Ionia wood, is straight and solid. The interior upholstery and trim appears to be original while the carpets have been replaced. A series of oil change stickers on the doors and jambs attest to its care and attention. Cars of this quality, style, utility and attractiveness in such uniformly sound and well-maintained original condition are increasingly hard to come by. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a complete, good running and driving, rare Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon that can be driven, enjoyed and even shown exactly as it is for years and years to come. You don't see them like this very often.

INDYCAR IN CALIFORNIA

Will Power (as I always say, 'I love that name') came in first for his second win in a row. Penske Team should be very happy since they have won all three races. Driving with a Chevy engine and coming from the back since all Chevy powered cars got a 10 place penalty at the start. Second place went to Simon Pagenaud, who had more experience with this track than any other driver. Third went to James Hinchcliffe who is turning into a pretty fine driver.

Takumo Sato, on my short list of favorites, went into the last lap in third place, but it was not meant to be. He tends to tighten up under pressure and this was no exception. Until his spin in the last lap he ran a fine race.

FORMULA ONE IN CHINA

Formula One victory for Nico Rosberg, gambling on a two-stop strategy and managing to hold off the rest of the field on worn tires. The first Mercedes victory in 57 years.

Rosberg, who also captured his first pole on Saturday, finished 20.6 seconds ahead of McLaren driver Jenson Button.

Lewis Hamilton of McLaren was third, followed by the Red Bull duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel in fourth and fifth. Hamilton said at the beginning of the season that his plan was to be on the podium in every race. So far that has worked for him and he is in the points lead.

Thirty years ago, Rosberg's father, Keke, won the World Championship with how many races? Just ONE......could it happen again? I don't think so, but I think that everyone was happy to see Rosberg get this one. He has paid his 'dues'...so to speak.

ENGINE CHANGES WILL CREATE AN INTERESTING RACE

Most Chevrolet personnel skipped lunch in the IZOD IndyCar Series paddock April 12 as they were busy trading out all 11 V-6 engines in cars entered in the 38th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The decision was made following the tear down and inspection of the engine in the No. 27 GoDaddy.com car of Andretti Autosport that experienced an issue during a team April 9 at Infineon Raceway.

Per the IZOD IndyCar Series rulebook, each of the 11 entries will be levied a 10-grid position penalty to start the 85-lap race April 15 on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit because of an unapproved engine change. Rules 15.5.1 and 15.6.1 outline the penalty for a change-out if the engine that has not reached its minimum threshold.

Through the first two races, Chevrolet's 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine has recorded two victories and two poles (one of each by Team Penske's Helio Castroneves and Will Power). Castroneves is the series championship points leader by two over Scott Dixon of Honda-powered Target Chip Ganassi Racing.

Others affected by the decision: Ryan Hunter-Reay, James Hinchcliffe and Marco Andretti of Andretti Autosport; Rubens Barrichello, Tony Kanaan and E.J. Viso of KV Racing Technology; JR Hildebrand of Panther Racing and Ryan Briscoe of Team Penske.

On April 11, the IZOD IndyCar Series announced that the No. 7 Lotus Dragon Racing car driven by three-time Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach winner would incur the same penalty for changing the Lotus engine following the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. He finished a season-high ninth.

BUYER BEWARE!

Bobby Patton thought he’d figured out a way to make a few bucks off a 1965 Chevelle. He’d punch out his own trim and VIN tag, throw in a 396 and some badges, and stick the car up on a popular online auction site for a quick $100,000. That’s what he did, last April. Only problem: There’s more to a Z16 than that, and the Z16 guys pay attention.

A thread on Chevelles.com quickly pointed out the problems with the car, starting with obvious issues such as the homemade VIN, with the incorrect codes and sequence within it. Jeff Helms, owner of the Z16 website and registry, soon contacted the owner (with great tact, I’d like to point out), and indicated some of the issues with the car:

"Hi, Roger. Thanks for sending the pictures. Unfortunately, your car is not a Z16. Nor is the engine a Z16 engine. Nor is it # matching to the car.

I own 2 real Z16′s, and am the owner and editor of the Z16 website and Z16 Registry. www.z16chevelle.com . . . So, trust me that I know what I am talking about (on this subject at least).

The VIN tag and the cowl tag that you have are homemade tags, where someone cut out a flat piece of aluminum the shape of the tag, and stamped what they wanted on it. On real VIN and cowl tags, the characters are raised, not impressed into the tag. I will email you pictures of real Kansas tags in a moment.

Further, whoever made the fake cowl tag copied the body # of a real Z16 (14629) from a picture on my website!! You will see that body number on the picture I am about to send you. The body numbers were not reused; each Z16 has a different body #; so your car could not have body # 14629 even if it was a real Z16.

You stated in the auction that it has a 160 MPH speedometer, but in the pics I can see that it is a 120 MPH speedometer.

The rear trim on Z16′s is totally different. Look at any of the pics on my website.

Lastly, the engine you have is not a Z16 engine. It is not even a 1965 engine. It is a 1966 Chevelle 396/360hp engine. With that casting #, the deckstamps mean:

TIIIIEF means Tonawanda engine plant, November 11, 396/360 HP 66 Chevelle application.

F105961 is the last 7 digits of the VIN number of the car that that engine originally came in. Which do not match the VIN # on your title. The head casting # is also for OVAL port 1966 396 heads, which were used on 396/325hp and 396/360hp engines. Not on 375hp engines, which used square port heads.

I sincerely hope you did not buy this car thinking it was a real Z16 and pay a real Z16 price for it. If you did, you need to hire a good lawyer and sue whomever sold it to you. You also need to go to Axxxx Motor Sales who performed your appraisal and demand your money back, because they obviously do not know what they are doing.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, if you did not already know all of this.

Thanks- Jeff Helms"

1955 NASH

1955 Nash Ambassador Custom Country Club 2 door hardtop.

The ultimate Auto sculpture by Italian designer Pinin Farina

s/n#V11227, MODEL #5587-2, Body#2683, original paint was 71/69 special ( I have the original tag/paint code found under glove box)

Just in time for a Spring cruise.

I’ve been a member of the Nash Club of America since 2005. It will be advertised in that club and locally as well. (I have some history on the car, but very little) I have invested well over double my conservative ask price. That’s the way with cars..lol.

Garaged. Driven regular. RARE, RARE, RARE . I clearly overdescribe/long winded items telling all the details, and often make great stuff sound “beat” This is an OLD car, drives like an old car, BUT is so cool and fun to own and drive, you will NOT be disappointed. It is not “beat”. Some changes in my life have me offering this rare car for sale. It will be sadly missed/if sold, but I truly believe someone else can take over the fun I’ve enjoyed and have it enrich their life as it has mine. I share my toys.

BIG brother to the Metropolitan Nashes. Don’t mistake this for a 4 door -6 cylinder bare bones. Top of the line Baby. No A/C or power windows but top shelf all the way o/wise. Interior (many years ago, now is worn) has been redone with vinyl,( original WAS white leather) and what was once a green fabric that has sun faded to purple!! Of course the seats fold down into a bed, and it comes with original (3) roll out Nash bed mattresses. Headliner is original and rough. Solid/ mainly all original floor is rubber mat covered inside, no carpet. Dual exhaust, and it RUMBLES and runs well. Lots of BALLS. It has a slight knock under load (maybe a wrist pin?) but o/wise is a strong runner. Rad is a complete rebuild. This car has had LOTS of TLC ( and $$ invested) in the 6 years I’ve owned it, always garaged/ run quite regular/No rain/dry weather/no snow. It really is a driver. Not sure I’d take it cross country though. Not a trailer queen.

More details:

Late Spring ( mid year) RARE factory addition in 1955, a 4 layer look 2 tone paint with stainless trim, Original Packard 320 JETFIRE( 208 h.p.) overhead valve V8 Motor and Twin Ultramatic automatic transmission, power steering, Airliner reclining seats, Twin travel beds (3), Unit Body (SINGLE UNIT ALL WELDED STRUCTURE) Construction, invisible gas cap, ( behind rear tail light) Scena-Ramic window ( widest for '55 front and rear) Deep Coil Springs, Continental rear tire kit, Plastic tinted sun visors, cigarette lighter, rear seat arm rest, Rubber crash front dash, roomy widest seat ever built into an auto at 65 inches of hip room, and more room overall than any other auto up to 1955, Low mileage/like new ( Coker repro’s..see it on their Website) Firestone Deluxe Champion wide whitewalls/spare, full chrome wheel discs. Newer brakes, tune up. (dual points) TONS of extra parts. SPARE- NOS clear windshield. lots of literature. 2 used front fenders, grille, hood, front bumper, conti kit shroud) Repro roll of seat fabric, (correct hounds tooth fabric) enough for interior. ( needs white vinyl or leather, windlace etc) 62,509 miles. ( may be original?) Extensive all new suspension/front end parts ( trunions etc.) work in 2005, Transmission serviced/ removed, and all new seals in 2007.

My suspension was totally shot when I bought the car. This car was hit, or hit something ( passenger side) MANY years ago, but was repaired well. The lower door trim on that side has been pieced together ( as in couldn’t find a doner/parts) but looks fine for a driver. The body is VERY straight and solid. The paint was redone nicely before I bought it in a salmon/peach/cream, where as the original color was more a tan / Palomino Brown&Snowberry white. (I have the color chips for NASH/HUDSON 1955). There were a couple of patches welded on the front floor corners ( VERY common rust area on these cars), and there is a bit of rust bubbling under the paint both sides dog legs by wheel, and a few small bubbles upper fender, but over all, solid, mostly rust free. New battery last year and a generator rebuild. Plating is pitted on grille/flying nude lady mascot, bit of blistering on bumpers and the rear bumper is bent along the bottom edges.( some silver paint touch up)

The previous owner converted it from 6 volt to 12 volt. Therefore the radio, and clock don't work. ( no antenna) My heater fan fried as well, but no big deal. I don't drive it in Winter. I did the valve cover gaskets/painted /detailed a few things last year. It is not a show car, just a nice driver. It has won awards and been featured in the local Winnipeg newspaper. Perhaps someone else will take it to the next level, or just enjoy it as it is. Either way, it is a piece of history that will always draw fascination and attention. The inboard headlights are so unique, the pontoon like fenders/swept back roof line!!

The original windshield would have been tinted, and it currently has a used replaced decent clear example. ( few stone chip repairs and some sandblast effect, but overall good) As mentioned, it comes with a boxed NOS front windshield, and all 3 tinted( used) rear glass plates.

This old girl drips a wee bit of trans fluid and coolant. Nothing serious. There is a bit of “blow by” from the PCV tube below the motor, but virtually nothing out the exhaust, and very little oil usage. I just had the engine block frost plugs replaced ( ok, for those who don’t know, they are metal plugs friction fitted into the block, so if low temperatures/freezing expands the coolant, they pop out, instead of the engine block cracking.)

That was my drip of coolant/maybe not?

This is just a NEAT old car. One you just don’t see. I know of only ONE other one in existance. See the Nash Club pics. Mine is the ONLY one. The rake/ish look, no door post/ LONG streamlined body is just flat out awesome. With the vent windows open, and front and rear side windows down, it looks and breathes WILD!!!

MICHIGAN PASSION

COBRA backbone frame, pioneered by Herb Adams, is key to the excellent ride and handling of this replica. This design not only makes the car structurally rigid, but it allows the driver and passenger to be seated 4 inches lower allowing them to see through the windshield, not over the top.

This frame can be provided in steel or aluminum to minimize weight. The car with the aluminum frame and 350 CID engine only weighs 2200 pounds.

The goal when the Contessa body was being developed was a very refined body shape featuring graceful lines remenicant of the classic sports cars of the 1960's. No radical aerodynamic devices or edgy lines, just a sleek elegant yet muscular sculptured body shape sure to turn heads.

CAMERO ZL1

CAMERO

On the track or on twisty country roads surrounding the Virginia International Raceway, the all-new Camaro ZL1 feels right at home.

The coolest thing about it is that it comes out of the box ready for use as a daily driver or a fun toy at the track — no modifications or options are required to get it ready for the track.

Even the warranty remains in effect while the 580-horsepower ZL1 is on the track, as long as it's not entered into a sanctioned race of some sort — then you would be on your own.

This is the best-performing stock Camaro ever, with zero-60 mph times of 4.0 seconds with the standard six-speed Tremec manual gearbox, or just 3.9 seconds with the optional six-speed automatic

The McLaren supercar is as close as you'll ever come to an asphalt-bound fighter jet. I'm screaming down a racetrack straightaway so quickly that I'd swear my silver car actually has after-burners.

I lift off the gas, downshift a gear and kite into a tight U-shaped curve, brushing the brakes only once. A warning chimes in my brain, telling me I'm going to crash into a wall or go into a terrible spin. Too much speed, too complicated a turn.

SPECIAL OF THE WEEK

1961 ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA SS

Only in Italy could a nationalized company, Alfa Romeo, conceive a new medium-priced sedan, then adapt its platform chassis, four-cylinder dual overhead camshaft engine and suspension to a coupe designed by Bertone to satisfy the parent company's need for sweepstakes prizes awarded to buyers of the company's bonds. But in Italy that company also designed, built and campaigned the multiple world championship winning 158 Alfetta grand prix cars. The Giulietta, like Jaguar's XK 120, was intended as a 200-unit promotion. It proved so popular production of the Giulietta Sprint coupe and Pinin Farina designed Spider eventually exceeded 44,000 units and was capped by production of the Bertone-designed Sprint Speciale, a concept car built in limited quantity of only 1,366 units over a five year life. The Sprint Speciale's design carried through to production quantities concepts first expressed in the early Fifties by the Bertone BAT concepts of Franco Scaglione and the Disco Volante sports cars. Based on the lightweight, nimble Giulietta chassis with high performance 100hp 1,290cc Veloce engines and 5-speed gearboxes, the Sprint Speciale weighed only 1900 pounds. Its sleek aerodynamic lines, low frontal area, trim fastback greenhouse and a cheeky Kamm-style truncated tail gave it a top speed of 124 mph, unprecedented in a 1.3 liter car. Overlooked for years by collectors, the Giulietta Sprint Speciale recently has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity, belated recognition of its unique style, performance and rarity. This 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale has recently been comprehensively restored to unmatched standards of fit, finish and function. Manufactured on the 27th November 1961, the car was sold new on the 29th January 1962 to Régie Nationale Usines, Billancourt, France. Every detail, from the meticulously finished and fitted bodywork through the show quality black leather upholstery with red piping matching the exterior color to the highly detailed engine compartment, engine, chassis and instruments, has been treated with care and respect for accuracy and quality.Only in Italy could a nationalized company, Alfa Romeo, conceive a new medium-priced sedan, then adapt its platform chassis, four-cylinder dual overhead camshaft engine and suspension to a coupe designed by Bertone to satisfy the parent company's need for sweepstakes prizes awarded to buyers of the company's bonds. INDYCAR IN ALABAMA

WILL POWER

One of my favorite tracks in the IndyCar series. Power, who inherited the point when Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves pulled off for this final service stop on Lap 68, held off Scott Dixon for the remaining laps that included a Lap 74 restart and won for the second year in a row at the picturesque venue.

Dixon, who was 3.3709 seconds behind in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car, has the distinction of being the race runner-up all three years (twice to Power and the inaugural race to Castroneves). He broke a tie with teammate Dario Franchitti with 27 on the all-time list and is one behind Castroneves.

Castroneves finished third to maintain the points lead in the young season and continue his resurgence after a disappointing 2011 season. He held off Graham Rahal in the No. 38 Service Chip Ganassi Racing car by 0.2245 of a second.
