AFFORDABLE WHEELS

1950 Buick
1960 Mercedes

Pedal cars are more popular than ever. Not only for children, but adults alike. They make quite an aray of cars which include Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, Audi TT Cabriolet, BMW M6 Convertible, Ferrari, Jaguar XK, Mercedes-Benz SL, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and 911, Renault Mégane Trophy Tuning and Volvo C70. Renault makes several different models including one of their Formula One car.

Some of these new ones have a push-push pedal system and others have proper pedals, adjustable seats, working horns and handbrakes. Wow! Prices range from $150 to $350. One thing I don't like is that they are all made out of very durable plastic.

The metal pedal cars from the 20's through the 60's are hot items at the auto auctions and some at pretty hefty prices. They hold shows for pedal cars only selling restored, unrestored and parts. I have a small collection in the States that are unrestored. There are some great restorers around. One of the best I have seen is from the Amish community. There are still companies making metal cars based on the old ones, but they are just not the same.

THE KING IS DEAD

EVEL KNIEVEL

The hard-living motorcycle daredevil, whose bone-breaking, rocket-powered jumps and stunts made him an international favorite in the 1970s,has died. He was 69. He broke as many as 40 bones and was in some seriously long comas a couple of times.

Famous for jumping over canyons, busses, cars he retired back in 1980, owed millions to the U.S. taxman. He never paid taxes on his jump money. Which over the years went from a measley $500 per jump to $6 million per jump.

He also was outstanding in track and field, ski jumping and ice hockey, he went on to win the Northern Rocky Mountain Ski Association Class A Men's ski jumping championship in 1957 and played with the Charlotte Clippers of the Eastern Hockey League in 1959. He also formed the Butte Bombers semiprofessional hockey team, acting as owner, manager, coach and player. Knievel also worked in the Montana copper mines, served in the Army, ran his own hunting guide service, sold insurance and ran Honda motorcycle dealerships. At various times and in different interviews, Knievel claimed to have been a swindler, a card thief, a safe cracker, a holdup man. An actor and producer of a couple of movies. A man's man.

He was succussful at marketing his name right up until his death. Severe illness left him a shadow of his former self these last 10 years, but his name will live on forever.

CHAMPCAR FINAL IN MEXICO

When you are the Champion you can do whatever you want. Sebastien Bourdais (France) shows the strain of a very long, problematic season. After some of the races being cancelled at the end of the season, putting in doubt how the series will play next year, Sebastien pulled a winner and a championship. He was followed across the line by Will Power (I love that name) and Oriol Servia. All done in Mexico City.

On the surface it looks like the next season is shaping up. From Florida to California, from Quebec to Alberta, from Mexico to Spain. Sixteen races in all and I hope for no cancellations.
