TUESDAY'S SPECIAL

1948 CADILLAC

1948 Convertible Series 62 convertible, unmolested convertible Cadillac. Number 3,950 of only 5,450 made. First year of all fin models for all Caddy or any other make or model! Inspired by the awesome P-38 Lightening fighter plane of WWII. People went crazy for these cars and they sold out quickly. One year only iconic 3/4 round "rainbow" speedometer. This is the last year of the tough flathead L-head V8 engine kown for smoothness, longevity and for being ultra quiet.

This is a rare 100% pure unmolested orignal survivor but for one premium color color change from new about 30 years ago. Only a handfull of these exist, even fewer are convertibles and even fewer are orignal. The interior is original and well taken care of. This is an honest straight car that has not been fussed with over the last 62 years. The paint is not perfect being 30 years old but is very presentable. The engine has never been cracked open from what I can tell. It has Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, hydraulic power windows, hydraulic convertible top, whisper-quiet vacuum power windshield wipers. This is indeed one very rare and sought after Cadillac.

Here are the specs: 126" wheelbase, last year of the flathead non-overhead cam 346 CI engine, 150 bh @ 3,400 rpm, 260 lbs of torque @ 1700 rpm, 3 bearing engine, 7.25 comp ratio, bore/stroke: 3.5 X 4.5

RALLY IN IRAN

A couple of weeks ago there was a rally in Iran that featured American cars. Isfahan Classic Car Rally was the first one in the city of Isfahan, the former capital of ancient Persia.

Looks just like America. Older Camaros and Mustangs are popular everywhere. If I read correctly the blue Pontiac in the center of the picture below was the winner.

FORMULA ONE IN ABU DHABI

THE SUN SHINES AND SETS ON "RedBull"

Sebastian Vettel, the whiner, ended up winning both the race in Abu Dhabi and the World Championship. Second and third went to teammates, from McLaren, Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button. In the Championship points Alonso came in second. As noted before, my favorite, Mark Webber came in third. Webber had a shunt with the wall and had to pit for checkup and tire change. When he returned he was way back in the pack and blocked by traffic. He ended up in 8th place for the race. Disappointed, but never complains unlike his whiney teammate Vettel.

WORLD CHAMPION 2010

Vettel might be a whiner, but he can drive like a bat out of hell. And very good in the rain which not all drivers are. This year he racked up 10 pole positions which is more that half of the races. He won 5 races out of the 19. Came in second twice and third three times. He is the youngest World Champion to date, age 23.

BOO-BOO

Michael Schumacher, who came out of retirement to race this year, had a very scarey accident. He spun so that he was facing traffic and Vitantonio Liuzzi ran over the top of his car. Inches from putting his head in another place.
So, next year will be a long one with 20 races. New addition.....India.

CYPRUS RALLY (MID-EASTERN STYLE)

Everyone here loves the Rally. We have several here a year of different types. This one was for the Middle Eastern Championship won by Andreas Mikkelsen from Norway. He also picked up €40,000 for the staged events for the masses. It is the first time they have ever had these staged events. Even though the rallys in other countries have had them for quite awhile.

Every two years we have the major rally, most years we have two rallys for the Mid-East Champion, the International Historic Rally, multiple rallys put on by the local classic car club. Biggest problem is that everyone here thinks they are a rally driver for weeks after the rally....best advice....don't  walk in the road.

TUESDAY'S SPECIAL

1949 HEALEY SILVERSTONE

According to our information this D-type Silverstone was first registred in early 1950 with registration-number BJV 125. The first owner only kept it very short and soon after sold it to John Venn who used the car in various national and international competition events.

From April 1953 onwards a further 5 English owners are known, before the car was then sold to Dr. H. Kelly in the USA. This Dr. Kelly completely restored the car and raced it in various club races in the USA, one of them being the 1974 Lowenbrau Vintage Car Grand Prix in Watkins Glen.

In 1989 the car returned to the UK in a very tired condition and was bought by David Ruddell from Surrey who restored it over a period of several years. After that restoration it was sold back to the USA again to Allan Casavant who raced it in American historic events. In 2009 the present European owner purchased the car.

Now recently the car has been fitted with new drum-brakes, dual braking system and it just had a mechanical rebuild of the rear-axle. With the car is a complete roll-over bar which can be easily bolted into the car for track-racing.

The car has a valid German registration-document, a recent FIA HTP that has been issued in July 2009 for Period E (1947 to 1961) and Class GTS2. Also a 2009 issued FIVA passport with gradation A3 is included. In the 2002 Healey book by Bill Emerson this particular car is featured several times on page 45.

A well sorted car that has all the required paperwork and the period competition history to be accepted for major events, such a Goodwood and the Mille Miglia.

FORMULA ONE IN BRAZIL

SEBASTION VETTEL

Sebastian Vettel led Mark Webber to a Red Bull one-two in the Brazilian Grand Prix to take the world title fight to the final race of the season. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso took third place to retain the championship lead from Webber and Vettel. Red Bull's formation finish ensured they clinched the constructors' championship for the first time. It is the fourth time in five years that the Driver's Championship will be decided in the last race. One more to go!

CARRERA PANAMERICA 2010

THE WINNER, DRIVEN BY FORMER RALLY CHAMPION SKODA ROVANPERA

The original Panamerica was run between 1950 and 1954. Due to safety concerns it was cancelled as the 1955 race was approching. Started again in 1988 and still running to this day using period cars and spread out over seven days. The are much safer today with modern equipment under the bodies.

The winner, by 1/10 of a second, was a Studebaker. Studebakers for second and third. In fact. Studebakers in first 15 times over the last 22 years. Drivers this year came from Canada, Finland, Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, USA, Uruguay and Mexico. The race is run in 7 stages at full bore. One hundred and twenty cars all seeking a win.

When I was a kid there were a lot of cars floating around that had run in the original races. There were many magazine articles being written long after the races had stopped. All this to advertise a 29,800 mile road from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska down to Chile. The end of the road is claimed by several cities in Chile.
