INDYCAR IN VIRGINIA

Scott Dixon made this the 19th win in his IndyCar series career. Which makes him tied with Hornish for the most in the history of the series.

His teammate, Dario Franchitti, came in second after starting off in the pole position. Third went to Graham Rahal, the son of Indy 500 Champion Bobby Rahal. His best result on an oval track. Next week, Watkins Glen, one of my favorites.

ILL WIND IN FORMULA ONE

Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone who basicly run the enterprise known as Formula One do so with an iron fist. So much so that the big teams and the big name drivers, that go with them, want out. They want to form a racing series of their own, but it isn’t going to happen for 2010. Beyond that, who knows?

We have seen this happen in the States when the C.A.R.T. Racing series, after 20 some years, slowly transformed into the Champ Car series. Then Champ Car folded into the already running IndyCar series. Each time leaving drivers and teams scrambling for spots.

I do hate to see it happen with Formula One after a 60 year run. Actually longer if you take into account the Grand Prix’ leading up to the formation of Formula One.

As always it is a question of money, rules and how it fits into getting the golden pot.

INDYCAR IN IOWA

Dario Franchitti took the lead with 50 laps to go and cruised to victory in the Iowa Corn Indy 250. Franchitti beat Ryan Briscoe by just over five seconds to grab his first victory since the Streets of Long Beach in April and move into second place in the IRL standings.

Briscoe finished second for the third straight race despite leading for 85 laps. Hideki Mutoh took a season-best third after notching a career best of second in Iowa in 2008.

FORMULA ONE IN ENGLAND

VETTEL AND WEBBER - RED BULL

Red Bull pulls a 1 - 2 in England. The Silverstone track has had its last Formula One race after 60 years. Sebastian Vettel showed that he can also win in a dry race. The guy is fantastic in the rain, but no rain today. His teammate, Mark Webber, came in second. Rubins Barrichelo, who is having a decent year after a long time, came in third.

In the overall standings, Button still holds the lead with 64 points. Second is Barrichelo with 41, followed by Vettel with 39 and Webber with 35.5 points.

CASH FOR YOUR OLD TUB...GEEEZ!

It has bothered me for years that several States had wanted to get older cars off the road. It bothers because I love old cars and I didn't see any real protection for those that collect and restore cars. Although, they claim should those type of laws be passed there would be some protection put into place, but for how long. When I came to Cyprus the island was not in the European Union. The surrounding European countries were trying to pass such laws. And once Cyprus got into the EU that was one of the first laws that came around, turn in your old car for cash. It had a lot of "ifs", "ands" and "buts" hitched to it. Here they don't get that much money. I see that the U.S. wants to give $3,500 or $4,500, which sounds like a lot, but as the dollar weakens it isn't that much.

I tried to find where they put the cars that they get here, but no one seems to know where they keep them. A car in Cyprus can last a very long time. I wanted to know where so that I could satisfy myself that just junk was being turned in. Not teenage Johnnie's backyard project that his parents thought was junk. They always do, you know. About 15 years ago I had a truck stolen and my mother was happy to see it go. No thought of what economic hardship it cost me.

So, now the federal government wants to do this across the vast and wide country. Who determines what is junk? England has been running this program for a few years and an English sportscar magazine recently took a look at what was being turned in. For collectors it was an eye-opening shock.

Your car might be next! Here is some the government's thoughts on what is eligble for trade-in: Cars and light trucks rated a combined (a blend of city and highway driving) 18 mpg or less; large pickups/SUVs at 15 mpg or less; work trucks built before 2002. Are they nuts! A definitive "yes." I am willing to bet that 'good' cars that are turned in will end up in some country that doesn't have that type of law. Dealers in the U.S. were sending bus' that were junk to Latin American countries for years. My car here is 12 years old and it looks very new compared to a 12 year old car in America. At least the northern States.

PEUGEOT DOES LE MANS - ONE, TWO

After years of Audi being the king at le Mans 24 hour race Peugeot has finally done it. Years ago when Peugeot was sold in the U.S. it was a problem child car. As were all the cars from Europe, but you should see them now. They all build great cars and in lots of ways they are miles ahead of the American brands.

This year's winning drivers were David Brabham, Marc Gene and Alexander Wurz. Brabham, a former Formula One driver and son of triple Formula One World Champion Jack Brabham. A personal favorite in his era. Gene, a former Formula One driver and a test driver of choice for several teams. Wurz, also a former Formula One driver, son of three time rallycross driver Franz Wurz and currently test driver for the new Brawn GP team that is taking Formula One by storm this year. Because of all the disenchantment in Formula One this year they say that the Le Mans group is courting those teams.

Americans Phil Hill, Masten Gregory, Carroll Shelby, Luigi Chinetti, Davy Jones (with Alexander Wurz), Hurley Haywood, Price Cobb, Al Holbert, Bill and Don Whittington. Most were multiple winner and Chinetti won in 1932 and 1934 as an Italian. Became a U.S. citizen in 1946 and won as an American in 1949.

The only full American team was in 1967 with Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt driving a Ford GT-40 from a team belonging to Carroll Shelby. Gurney, a great Formula One driver, designer and team owner in F1, sprayed Foyt with champagne at the end of the race. As we all know it became a tradition that we see at the end of races today.

FORMULA ONE IN TURKEY

Jenson Button did it again....six wins out of seven races. Followed by Mark Webber (my personal favorite) in second and his Red Bull teammate, Sebastian Vettel, in third.

INDYCAR IN TEXAS

Another Penske one, two punch. Helio Castroneves beat his teammate again for the win. Teammate Ryan Brisco was closely behind for second and Scott Dixon finished off the top three in third. A night race which is shown here in Cyprus at 5:00 AM. Ouch!
