FORMULA ONE IN SPAIN

SEBASTIAN VETTEL

In a "ho-hum" race, Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull collected his 25 points for his days work. He started from the pole position and never gave it up. Lewis Hamilton, who won here in 2008 and 2009 was hoping for a hat-trick, but he had to settle for second. He just couldn't seem to catch up. Rolling into third was Jenson Button, Hamilton's teammate.

Vettel's teammate, Mark Webber who is my favorite this year, started in second and had a 200 mile per hour crash that he was able to walk away from.....lucky man.....again.

The reason I say "again" is because of the memory of him flipping at Le Mans in 1999. He flipped in both the qualifying and the warm up. Neither was his fault, it was a Mercedes problem as their other car did the same thing.

1983 Avanti GT Trivia

Avanti Motor Corporation was sold to Stephen H. 'Steve' Blake on October, 20, 1982. Blake was a real estate developer and self-proclaimed "car nut". He became an Avanti enthusiast one day when his Maserati would not start. That incident led him on a search for something gorgeous that does not break. What he found was the Avanti II.

Upon purchase of the company, Blake set about to change almost everything. The most obvious change was to the Avanti's appearance. The body was reworked with integrated resin bumpers. He also changed the way employees were managed, he engineered a race car, an anniversary edition, and a convertible. His whirlwind appearance in South Bend generated much enthusiasm in the press and auto community resulting in 1983 being the highest volume year ever. (289)

But all was not well... Blake's impulsive management style, quick changes, and bad luck caused problems. The 1983 Avantis were panned by the press as having poor fit and finish and generally low production quality. The biggest blow was Blake's failure to test a new paint used on 1984 models. The formulation was intended to provide a more durable show quality finish. Instead it was a nightmare. Angry customers were
returning their cars with sheets of paint literally falling of the doors. Blake repainted 270 cars. Some of them several times. Sales dropped and suddenly Blake was unable to pay his taxes or creditors.

INDYCAR IN IOWA

TONY KANAAN

Popular driver, Tony Kanaan, after two years has finally won a race. He is now the guy to watch no matter where he qualifys. He started off in 15th and ended up on top. In second, Helio Castroneves, who has been having a decent season since his win in tax court. E.J. Viso, with a career best, finished in third. So, lots of happy faces.

BLEACHER.COM LISTS THE TOP TEN FORMULA ONE CARS

1. LOTUS 49 (1967)

The 49 became the backbone for the Lotus team’s first tentative steps into the world of wings and served them through until 1970 when it was replaced with the Lotus 72.

It was the apparent simplicity of design, without the electronics, wind tunnels, wings and other aids that makes these cars so special.

They were still complex by the standards of the day, but by modern standards they were almost horse-and-buggy technology.

But, with the distinctive green and gold livery, it was the most beautiful horse and buggy to ever take to a race track.

2, ANGLO AMERICAN RACING EAGLE (1967)

The hand of former Lotus designer Len Terry was very evident in this gem from the golden-era of F1. It was built by Dan Gurney and the legendary Carroll Shelby as an “All American” tilt at the world of Formula One.

In those days, before the advent of wings, the elegant simplicity of design, form and function was what it was all about. The design focused on creating mechanical grip and a platform for drivers to show off real driving skills.

Again, it wasn’t a particularly brilliant race car—it was hamstrung by reliability problems—but from the eagle’s beak nose, to the exotic alloy tailpipes, it was a stunningly beautiful car.

3. LOTUS 97T (1985)

4. McLAREN MP4/5 (1989)

In the now universally recognized Marlboro livery, the MP4/5 absolutely dominated the 1989 season, despite the simmering feud between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost that threatened to derail their progress towards the driver’s and constructor’s championships.

The MP4/5 took pole position in 15 of the 16 races and won 10. The Prost-Senna rivalry drove development of the car at a ridiculous pace and left their competitors in their wake.

It also resulted in some bitter battles that inevitably ended up in a tangle at the side of the Suzuka track.

The car itself was a work of art. The smooth flowing lines, clear of the ticks, twitches and protuberances that mark the modern cars. The simple red and white paint scheme, which television never adequately captured, is iconic.

The car—unforgettable.

5. BRABHAM BT52 (1983)

6. MASERATI 250 F (1957)

Any car driven by Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, and Alberto Ascari has some serious credibility in the F1 world. Add to that the name Maserati and you have an instant classic—or you did in 1957, anyway.

With the silver Mercedes W196, these were the product of a simpler, but infinitely more elegant, times. They bring back memories of grainy footage of the legends of the sport, drifting the cars through corners. They don’t drive like that any more.

The front engined rocket took the 1957 world championship with Fangio at the helm and cemented its place in history.

While it was soon out-evolved, as is the way in F1, by Ferrari and the nimble Cooper Climax (is there a better name for a race car?), it had stamped its name indelibly into the history books.

7. BRM 160 (1971)

8. WILLIAMS FW16 (1994)

9. ARROWS A2 (1979)

10. FERRARI F2007

TUESDAY'S SPECIAL

1955 Bandini Siluro 750cc DOHC

Bandini Siluro #358 sports racing car is now being offered for sale. This Bandini is one of 46 known Bandinis in the world today and is the only Siluro (torpedo) with a Series 2 twin cam engine. The engine produces 71 bhp and because the car only weighs 750 pounds, it has amazing acceleration and has been timed at 115 m.p.h. It retains all of its original metal, from the hand hammered aluminum body to the interior sheet metal. The fenders on the car are removable and the original tonneau covers the passenger seat which made it eligible to also compete in Formula 3 racing in Italy. The 750cc Bandini DOHC engine is original to the car. It was imported to the US in 1958 by TB Davis of Dallas Texas to compete in the SCCA H Modified class. Its first documented race was the November 15, 1959, Daytona National Championship race with Hugh Grammar driving for Davis. It was then bought and campaigned by Hugh Grammar in the SCCA Southwest Region where it won the Hmod championship from 1961 to 1963 and finished second in 1964. Its last known race was the November 14-15, 1964 Riverside American Road Race of Champions. This Bandini has a continuous ownership history from new and for the last 25 years has been in Jack Reuter's garage. It has been shown in the 1999 Concorso Italiano, the 2002 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where it won a prize and, most recently, at the 2010 Amelia Island Concours where it also won a prize. This one off timeless classic is hand made Italian rolling sculpture that Cellini would be proud of and is eligible for the most prestigious classic car gatherings in the world including the Mille Miglia Historics, Ville d'Este, and Goodwood to name a few. FORMULA ONE IN CANADA

BUTTON AND HAMILTON

Ah, Canada! Always a good race. A track that is hard on cars and drivers alike. It was a beautiful day there, at least Lewis Hamilton thought so. His teammate, Jensen Button came in second and trailing in third was Fernando Alonso. While Hamilton and Button were enjoying the podium finish Alonso just didn't seem to be with it. Could he have been unhappy with third? He wasn't in contention for anything else. The race puts Hamilton and Button first and second in the points.

24 HOURS OF LE MANS

At the Indy 500 it is all about the winner. No one remembers who came in second or third. At the Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance race it is all about the car. This year Audi pulled it off in one, two, three. Three drivers per car alternating throughout the 24 hours, but only one can be behind the wheel when it crosses the finish line. Timo Bernhard was the lucky man. In the center is Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Mike Rockenfeller. In second place, on the left is Marcel Fassier, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluter. In third place, on the right is Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish. Every year it rains at some point during the 24 hours. I thought they escaped it this year because every time I watched it the track was dry. Wrong again, it did rain at some point in the middle of the night. This is the oldest endurance race which started in 1923 and run every year except during the war years.

A DREAM COME TRUE....

11 YEARS OLD

It will be interesting to see what this kid is doing when he is 19 years old. At age 11 he has been signed by the Ferrari Driving Academy to train as a Formula One driver. Lance Stroll, from Canada, has been racing karts for the last 3 years and driving since age 5. The new breed of race car drivers were all brought up in the kart racing field. Who would have thought that those things we rode around on in the 60's would end up playing such an important part in the racing field. This kid even looks like a Formula One driver already.
