ANOTHER FUTURLINER COMES UP FOR SALE

Mentioned before on this blog, the Futurliner was produced by General Motors products in its Parade of Progress. They would focus on their new car lineup, some of the product used in them, televisions, probably washing machines, etc. What I have noticed as I looked up the history of these vehicles is that they all seem to have different production years which I think is not likely. Because they were so hard to see out of they had a lot of accidents over the years. GM ran from 1936 to 1941 before World War II and then picked up again in 1953 through 1956. They made 12 to begin with and almost all ended up in junk yards or some other form of storage. Along come the restorers. One ended up as a motor home, one was bought by Oral Roberts to use as a traveling stage. The Roberts bus is thought to be in Central or South America. Some were restored to original condition or are in the process of it. One is in Sweden under restoration. Two have disappeared, one of those might be the Roberts bus. So if you see one out in a field somewhere you should check it out.  One that was restored was sold a few years ago for $4 million and is currently on display in Flint, Michigan.

The one that is coming up for sale started out as nothing. Mostly a rusted-out hulk. This one is considered Number 5 of the lot with 1941 as the year. Because nothing was left but the cab in the hands of the new owner it was given 20,000-pound air-sprung axles front and rear and gets its power from a Cummins NTC-230 855-cu.in. straight-six diesel engine running through an Allison 600-series five-speed transmission. The Cummins is substantially larger than the GMC straight-six gasoline engine that previously powered Futurliner No. 5, so to make it easy to work on the engine once installed, he converted the Futurliner front section into a tilt cab. At the same time, he fabricated a new body section to house the radiator for the Cummins behind the cab, and he made sure to include seating for four and air conditioning inside the cab. While the GM lettering on the nose of the cab is original, they had to source a windshield from somebody in Canada.

It now lives again as a car/truck carrier. And it isn't cheap........ 1-818-419-9989

Michael Schumacher, all geared up for skiing had a tragic accident yesterday. While skiing in the French Alps he fell striking a rock with his head. Even though he was wearing a helmet he has life threatening brain injuries.

After spending 20 years putting his life on the line in Formula One, winning a record 91 races, seven time world champion this would seem very odd. These F1 guys are always living on the edge, its in their blood.

We can only wish him well.

While Horseless Carriage Club of America officials say they have not yet totally cleaned up from the aftereffects of the IRS rescinding the club’s 501(c)(3) non-profit status, they are ready to move on from the ordeal with a renewed focus as a club after more than two years of bureaucratic maneuvering. In the months after the IRS declared that it would revoke the HCCA’s 501(c)(3) non-profit status in May 2011 and consider it a for-profit organization, many club members feared that the loss of that status would effectively spell the end for the club. Though the club, founded in 1937, had spent much of its existence as a 501(c)(7) non-profit organization – as a social or recreational club, according to the IRS tax code – it switched to 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2007, thus enabling donations to the club to become tax deductible (and, the club hoped, resulting in more and larger donations to the club). That change, however, also necessitated that the club provide an educational aspect, and the club had a difficult time proving that it had fulfilled that obligation during a subsequent IRS audit. Richard Cutler, who served as president of the HCCA in 2011 and has since sparred with the IRS on the club’s behalf, wrote on the club’s website that he and other club officials decided that the club wouldn’t just roll over and die. They responded to the revocation with a formal appeal and in the meantime came up with a fallback plan that included the formation earlier this year of two spinoff organizations: the Horseless Carriage Education Institution, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated exclusively to educating the public about horseless carriages and early automotive history, and the Horseless Carriage Club Association, a 501(c)(7) non-profit that would assume the club’s ongoing social activities – its tours, meets, and conventions.

The former organization, with a board of directors but no members, has since assumed about $26,000 of the HCCA’s tax-deductible donations, while the latter organization may not be needed after all.
Though the IRS has since denied the HCCA’s appeal of the revocation, the HCCA pressed on with a plan to revert the original club back to 501(c)(7) non-profit status, allowing it to remain in existence and theoretically reducing the number of hassles regarding the club’s lifetime members and other assets (and thus making the newly formed Horseless Carriage Club Association effectively redundant). “The IRS has been good at providing little in the way of follow-up to questions as they relate to ‘what’s next?’” Cutler wrote. “With the lack of these specifics, we are moving forward with what we believe to be correct. Our goal is to show good intentions reducing the possibility of any further action by the IRS towards our organization. We will take silence as a positive sign. It has been suggested by some that we continue to fight the ruling. All evidence indicates that this will only result in more expense with no change in status. It is time get this behind us and move on.” The club has scheduled a number of tours and other events for 2014, and Cutler wrote that the HCEI has begun to develop relevant educational materials, as per its mission. Ayrton Senna, considered to be one of Formula One’s most legendary drivers, was apparently also very much a fan of Honda’s road cars; more specifically the NSX. In total Senna owned three of the mid-engined exotics. Now one of these gems has been listed on eBay for a mere US$180,000.


The latest iteration of the NSX retains very little in the way of its predecessor’s technology and engineering elements. However, for fans of F1, anything with Senna’s name on it carries with it significant historic importance. Now they have the chance to own one of the driver’s personal rides.

Showing only 30,000 miles on the odometer, the 1991 red NSX up for sale was made available to Triple World F1 Champion Ayrton Senna by Honda during his time in Portugal. As the seller notes, "I would like to say 'never been thrashed or raced', but I would be lying as you can see Senna spinning the wheels in the video Racing Is In My Blood. The car was requested specifically by Senna as a loaner when he was the reigning World champion in 1991 and 1992 when he stayed at his Home in the Portuguese region of the Algarve."

The listing goes on to say that prior to being owned by MSCars of Portugal for the last 15 years, the car belonged to a wealthy banker.

Senna’s red NSX can be viewed at the current owner’s property in East Sussex, England or online through eBay.

This week, we have Julien Mahiels’ behind the scenes gallery from one of 2013’s undisputed highlights, the Goodwood Revival. At Goodwood, even just the scenes in the paddock are almost as exciting as the racing itself, and this gallery certainly shows that. From Auction Editor Rick Carey, meanwhile, we have not one but two thorough reports, one from the Bonhams sale at the Simeone Automotive Museum, and one from the Mecum fall sale in Kansas City.

Of course, we’re naturally looking ahead to next year as well, and it’s clear that people will be going mad for all things Maserati. The Italian icon celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2014, and Maserati will be featured at both the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. We can hardly wait.

BUYER BEWARE

In the 1930s, British sports-car maker MG made exactly 33 of the K3 open-top race car. If you want to buy one now, there are more than 100 to choose from.

No, the defunct carmaker didn’t restart production. The tripling of the K3 fleet is part of the booming trade in fake antique autos as soaring prices for classic cars spur sophisticated counterfeits, according to Bernhard Kaluza, vice president of international antique auto club FIVA.

“In the 1990s, I would find one faked car every five years,” said Norbert Schroeder, who verifies classic cars at TV Rheinland, a Cologne, Germany-based technical testing company. “Now I find up to five fakes a year.”

Vintage cars have gained in appeal, especially since the financial crunch. Auction values have risen more than sevenfold over the past decade, according to data from market tracker Historica Selecta. British auction house Bonhams, which says global sales total more than $1 billion a year, sold a 1954 Mercedes-Benz F1 car for 19.6 million pounds ($32.1 million) in July, setting a world record at auction.

The lure of antique autos is evident in the case of a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4. Bonhams sold the exact same car in unchanged condition for 230,000 pounds in 2011, more than four times the price paid in 2003, said James Knight, the head of auction house’s motoring department.

Demand remains high. At a Dec. 1 auction, Bonhams, which performs numerous checks before accepting a vehicle, sold dozens of vintage autos, including a 1964 Porsche 904 GTS racing coupe for 1.15 million pounds.

“People with a lot of money prefer to have a classic car in the garage than money in the bank,” said Adolfo Orsi, president of Historica Selecta, a consulting company that specializes in classic cars. “When there is a lot of money, there are fakes. In today’s world, it is possible to replicate everything.”

Sophisticated forgers have been known to buy up old screws and washers, leave reproduced frames in fields to weather and even have parts copied to make fakes harder to detect. FIVA’s Kaluza says counterfeiters even bought an old movie theater in France to get the worn antique leather from the seats.

“The people faking cars are not a few lone wolves,” said TV’s Schroeder, who has traveled as far as California to authenticate cars, including evaluating welding joints and chemically testing the metal to determine its age. “It’s organized crime because it’s expensive to build such cars and you need a good infrastructure to do it.”

Christian Jenny has confronted the risks. The former chief information officer of Zurich Insurance Group AG spent five years proving his rare 1952 Jaguar C-Type convertible was authentic, after another model showed up on the market claiming to have the same identification number.

The owner of 13 vintage Jaguars consulted numerous experts, including Norman Dewis, chief test engineer for the British luxury brand for more than 30 years. With the car valued at about $2.5 million, there was a lot at stake.

“It might be a problem if you tried to sell the car years later,” said Jenny, who is now retired and lives in Thalwil, Switzerland. Verifying the car was “a precautionary measure.”

Authenticating cars isn’t easy. Simon Kidston, a classic-car consultant in Geneva, was offered an Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ racer from the 1960s from a seller who claimed to have discovered the car in a scrapyard in northern Italy.

After consulting numerous sources, Kidston eventually discovered a photo of a car with the same identification number that was involved in a fiery crash at the Sebring race in 1964. The driver only barely escaped.

“It was clear there could be nothing left of the original car,” said Kidston, who rejected the offer.
Other frauds are subtle, like taking an vintage Porsche 911 and turning it into a high-performance 911 RS version, which would quadruple the car’s value.

Peerless Motor Cars (Cleveland, Ohio 1900-1931) was the first company to adopt what would become the standard of automobile design, a front mounted engine driving the rear wheels through a solid drive shaft.

Barney Oldfield shattered world speed records with the Peerless “Green Dragon”

Many collectors believe the Peerless motorcars to be some of the finest automobiles built in the USA in the 1920"s renowned for their high performance and stylish luxury. However, Peerless is the rarest and hardest to find of the “three P"s” as it went out of business in 1932 during the depression.

THE SAD PLIGHT OF A COLLECTABLE PARTS CAR AUCTION

Not that anyone was keeping score, but the crusher contracted to provide cleanup after the sale defeated the preservationists at the Lende Collection Auction held Nov. 2 in Walum, N.D. The sale, presented by VanDerBrink Auctions, offered 122 vehicles, including four vintage tractors. Unfortunately, 66 of those, or 54 percent, received no offer greater than the opening $325 crush bid and were relegated to be squashed.

After the sale, a visibly frustrated Yvette VanDerBrink, head of VanDerBrink Auctions, speculated that much of the reluctance by bidders to make offers on the vehicles stemmed from pre-sale rumors that the three Lende brothers were not in agreement on which brother actually owned the vehicles being auctioned, and that sales might be invalidated due to this family infighting. The three brothers’ collection involves a former salvage operation, and the 122 vehicles in the auction were only a small portion of this overall collection.

After the first 11 vehicles auctioned received no bids exceeding crush rate, VanDerBrink temporarily halted the auction to assure the gathered bidders that she had secured a court order mandating that all sales of the 122 vehicles would be legal and binding.

The top five sales reflected continued bidder reluctance, with a 1959 Chevrolet Impala Nomad station wagon, in No. 4 condition being the top seller at $2,400. It was followed by a ’59 Chevy Bel Air four-door sedan at $1,150, ’57 Ford Country Sedan station wagon at $1,050, ’63 Chevy C10 longbox pickup at $825 and ’64 Chevy Biscayne station wagon at $600.

Two noteworthy bargains were both in No. 4 condition: a 1967 Chevy Chevelle 300 four-door sedan, six-cylinder-powered, that sold for $330, and a ’61 Ford Fairlane four-door sedan, V-8 powered, that sold for $350.

Among noteworthy vehicles not receiving bids and sent to the crusher were a foursome of 1959 Plymouths: Fury, Belvedere and Savoy four-door sedans and a Plaza two-door sedan — all loaded with donor-quality parts; a rust-free ’59 Studebaker Lark two-door sedan; complete ’55 Nash Ambassador Super four-door sedan; complete ’58 Opel Rekord two-door sedan; and a trio of ’66 Ford F-100 pickups, each also containing many donor-quality parts.

The auction also included the sale of a select number of parts, including prewar headlamps and body panels and postwar hubcaps.

FORMULA ONE IN BRAZIL

So that's it, the season is done. Vettel breaks a couple of records like winning 9 races in a row in a single season and winning 13 races overall in a single season. I am hoping that next year will be different. I hate it when one driver dominates everything. It is possible that everything could change with the new rules in engines, etc. Just so you know, since I like Webber, I would feel the same way if he was winning every race. Webber did come in second and he had to work for it. In what has been his standard this year, he didn't get off the starting line very well. Alonso did come in third, he had been suffering from some minor injuries the last couple of races.
WEBBER SWAN SONG
 
Mark Webber has been my favorite driver for many years now and I am going to miss him in Formula One. After 12 years he has decided to hang up his Formula One helmet and move to another series. In his 12 years he has driven 217 races with 9 wins and 42 podium finishes. He drove for four separate teams, Minardi, Jaguar, Williams and Red Bull. I wish him well in his new venture.

Hudson Commodore 8 Convertible. Purchased from the estate of Herbert Bell of Gainesville, Georgia ,July 2011. Herb had this car in his collection since the late 70's or early 80's. He also owned a large collection of Hudson autos of various years. He had two 49 Commodores. This one and the car used in the filming of the movie "Driving Miss Daisy" .These two 49's were parked next to each other. A beautiful sight! Some Historians have estimated that total of less than 600 of these cars were built in 1949. Many convertibles were the lesser Super 6 and Commodore 6 models. Not many of these top of the line cars were built nor survived. Serial number is 49487648. Beware..There are convertible clones out there. This one is authentic. It is documented. I have been owner and restorer of step down Hudsons since 1972, This my second 49 Commodore 8 convertible. The first I sold in 1977. It resides in Smyrna Georgia today. Herb used this car very little, just a few local shows and parades. This car has never received a complete restoration. It was maintained as needed over its 64 years. Paint, upholstery, chrome etc. You might call it a "survivor". I do not think the mileage on the odometer is correct. It says about 48,000. I suspect it was replaced at some time in the past. From what I have seen in working on the car.. It probably has about 80K miles on it. Most of that mileage was in its early years. I doubt Herb put more than , at the most , a few thousand on it. Approved factory accessories include Turn signals, radio, fog lights, fuel door trim, and front bumper over riders. , The usual owner's manual and various receipts. Hydraulic bumper jack and under seat heater are included ,as well as various "convertible only" parts. The heater has not been installed yet. It doesn't get that cold in Florida! . No doubt that I have forgotten something ! Since it's a Commodore rather than a Super, It has hydraulic windows, crank out vent windows in front, Upscale instrument faces , front fender ornaments, Larger two piece hood ornament, large two handle trunk latch and wider rocker panel stainless trim. Even the steering column is chrome. Trunk ornament is also much larger than the Super version. The door handles inside and out are upscale from a Super. Two tone paint scheme, Maroon upper and ruby red lower. Most of the work I had to do was a result of not using it! This car was undercoated when new and has NO RUST , nor rust repairs. I have a lift here in the shop and will be happy to let you inspect every square inch. Still maintains its 6 volt Pos. Gnd. system that works well. It is a three speed column shift with overdrive, which makes it an effective 4 speed. Still has the original rubber trunk mat, Just prior to my purchase, Herb's estate had some work done on the car to make it safe to drive. New battery, new or rebuilt brake wheel and master cylinders. All flex lines and some rigid lines replaced. New exhaust system. Ignition tune-up and a hydraulic pump for the windows and top. Since my purchase in July, I have made a great deal of improvements that include the following. Not in the order they were done, but as I can recall. Work done/Parts replaced Front bumper, bumper guards and grille guard. Front and rear shocks, motor mounts and transmission mount, center drive shaft mounts, Fuel pump, N.O.S. fog lights, N.O.S. Carburetor, Pertronix ignition module in distributor(6 V Pos. Gnd.), battery cables, starter drive, Complete MAJOR rebuild of the 8 cylinder engine, including repoured main and rod bearings, valves, guides, springs etc., complete new clutch, transmission seals and gaskets, left rear axle outer seal, upper control arm snubbers, new coil, rebuilt dual action fuel pump, Rebuilt wiper motor, radio repaired, top replaced, proper glass rear window with chrome plated metal frame . all four hydraulic window lift cylinders, Hydraulic lines in doors, two power window switches, exhaust deflector, Two re-plated wheel covers, various rubber seals for the top/windows/trunk, All new stainless trim along bottom of fenders and doors. shift linkage rod ends rebushed, rear fender rocker panel extensions replaced (they were bent, not rusted), left rear bumper end, Goodyear 4 1/4" W/W front tires(due to weather checking of the otherwise good ones), A used exhaust manifold to replace a cracked one, rebuilt overdrive solenoid. Auxiliary direct reading temperature guage, This car drives like a 49 commodore should. No road wander and it's quiet! Not like the sixes.. What does it need? Some minor chips and scratches in the paint and upholstery could be addressed. The wiring harness should be replaced due to age. The gauges work and the clock does work, but losses time! The steering wheel has some minor cracks, as would be expected of an original car, but no missing plastic. This car had DriveMaster originally, but that has been removed. The wiring harness and switch as well as some shifting linkage is still intact. I have several boxes of used and NOS DriveMaster parts that go with the car. Missing, are the brackets that adapt it to the eight cylinder engine. Your decision to purchase a new wire harness depends on whether you will use the DriveMaster or eliminate it.
